Android is outselling Iphones says Tesco

Every little Android helps
Wed Mar 09 2011, 16:03

ANDROID SMARTPHONE SALES have surpassed those of Apple Iphones for the first time at Tesco, the mega-mart has announced.

The devourer of greenfield sites says it is seeing a huge switch in customer demand. Iphones had been outselling Android handsets two-to-one before Christmas but now phones running the open source OS are racing past Steve Jobs' creation. January saw the two neck and neck and February saw Android overtake.

Graham Harris, CEO of Tesco Telecoms and Tesco Mobile said, "As one of the UK's leading operators, these sales are a useful barometer for smartphone trends. There is a lot of choice in the market and as a result consumers are driving healthy competition between rival operating systems."

Showing once again that Apple produces premium priced products for a small sector of the market only, Tesco Mobile said that the rise of Android smartphones is due to their affordability.

To drive home the point about Android growing fast, Tesco Mobile also said that its sales trend "underpins recent statistics released by industry analysts Gartner". Those statistics say that Android sales grew by nearly 900 per cent from 2009 and that 67.2 million Android-based units were sold in 2010. µ

Apple need to losen the belt.

iPhone 5 needs some serious magic a color change and speedier cpu wont be enough.

iPhone 5 better have a memory slot and support flash otherwise its the same old same old limitations of the Apple devices.

That's exactly the point

@LoCatus

That's exactly the point, anyone wanting to buy Android can by an OS that they can run anything they want on, and better for developers and businesses (not just a monkey who doesn't know how to do stuff), they can make apps for them that don't have to be approved and most likely rejected by the all powerful aPple app store with no reason what so ever.

And having Android as an OS means those buying can get a phone that will suit their needs, some want large screens for viewing videos and movies, some want small screens just for phoning and texting, others want fixed or slide out keyboards to make writing emails 100 times better for work or keeping up to date on social networks. Getting Android means you are not becoming a sheep with exactly the same phone as all the other sheep with no imagination.

And from a practical point of view, Android owners can also be fairly safe in the knowledge that whether they be at work or home or in the car or at a friends, if the battery runs down they can plug into charge using a generic USB connector which most people have rather than having to cart their own sync cord with them. Oh, and if away where there is no ready access to charging points they can take spare batteries and change them!!! Oh, and buy relatively inexpensive micro sd memory card upgrades to expand their portable music library, you can't expand an Iphone's memory.

Just a few points in Androids favour :)

@ Alan Denman

Come on now Alan, let's not be so naive.

Android is open source. It can be used by many handset manufacturers. iOS cannot.

If for example, the only android handset available was the Samsung Galaxy S or Desire HD etc, then you know as well as I do, that android would be outselling iOS.

OS outsells Device

Android is an OS on many different devices. The iPhone is a single device.

When you can report that a single Android running device is outselling the iPhone, THEN it will be news. Until then IT DON'T MEAN SQUAT!

It's much harder to sell Tesco junk thesse days

Most Tesco stores only sold basic phones and often at smartphone prices.

Welcome to the 21st century Tesco.

iPhony 5

Those nerds are just waiting for another opportunity to once again take a huge chunck of money from their daddy's wallet.

Also, different from Androids, iPhonys become obsolete every 6 months. Nothing can beat that.

Good for android

They have lots of cloners using Android, I sure that apple is shaking in its boots from atop its 40 Billion pile of cash.

Seriously has the iPhone ever lost money a has the App store?

Until the Andriod mob make money like Apple does , its a non story.

Apple is happy with its share of the market if it keeps making it billions in profit!.
