Ubuntu 11.04 will be multi platform

Drops edition names
Wed Mar 09 2011, 15:49

CANADIAN LINUX VENDOR Canonical is dumping its netbook edition of Ubuntu, or more accurately it is being absorbed into the new shell that the software group says is good for any form factor.

The outfit is dropping the whole idea of naming software as editions. From Ubuntu 11.04 the core product will be called simply Ubuntu. However the server version of Ubuntu will be maintained as a separate product called, unsurprisingly, Ubuntu Server 11.04.

The move is a reaction to increased demand for the operating system on laptops. It also follows confusion after laptop users understandably presumed that the desktop edition wasn't suitable for them and were therefore searching the web for a laptop version. So the Ubuntu 11.04 edition will apparently run on desktop, netbook and laptop platforms.

Canonical said, "The introduction of the new shell for Ubuntu means that we have a user interface that works equally well whatever the form factor of the PC." Currently this new version is expected to be released towards the end of April. µ

i'm running alpha 3 on my eeepc with 600 wide res and if you use autohide for the launcher, no problem.

this release is by far the best ubuntu yet and it hasn't even reached beta!

p.s. i dont usually get excited about software but hey this really is the deal.

Tried Netbook edition

With their revolutionary idea of putting the taskbar down the side due to the 600 pixel depth of the netbooks.

Nice idea guys except that now, as well as having to still scroll up and down a lot, we now have to scroll more left to right as well.

Great....just great.

Give me Ubuntu no-OO edition

Can't they release a version of Ubuntu that doesn't come with Open Office? Yeah, I know, server edition, but I just want the desktop without that stupid office suite.

Idiots also know Grammar.

@Armatian.

If idiots can write properly, what does that say about you?

How long before the take it to the next level?

While they're at it, why not create a single, unified 'Ubuntu' distro that at install time asks if you prefer Gnome or KDE?

There should be just 'Ubuntu', which lets you choose between options. The KDE desktop option, the GNOME desktop option, the multimedia extras option (medibuntu), the educational option (edubuntu) etc.

Seriously, from a marketing standpoint the advantage would be huge. Of course they'd have to do some serious repackaging, and create a unified experience that lets you add and remove or switch between options.

Idiots

Maybe you'r jealous because you lack iq needed to run it without issues, but if idiots can run linux, you must have really serious issues, you use a tutor to comment for you?

A name change isn't enough.

I always get a laugh when I read linux fandroids criticizing enterprise software and propietary OS'.

Shortly after I give it a try, the laughs quickly turn to sadness and irk whenever a device drivers doesn't work, the screen gets crazy, the computers reboots itself and something else simply doesn't work.

My take? Libre office and open office excluded, FOSS sucks and no name change is ever going to change that.

Perhaps you people should consider uniting efforts to finally fix the piece of crap that linux is so it finally gets more than 1% idiot users.

New version of old flaws

I bet they won't fix that icons that keep moving around into the toolbars whenever I change screen resolution.

As all that old flaws that are obviously irritating and obviously fixable.
