Limewire settles lawsuit with music publishers

Just in time for its fight with the record companies
Wed Mar 09 2011, 11:20

ONCE POPULAR filesharing network Limewire has settled a lawsuit brought by 30 music publishers.

Limewire was shut down last year after it was found to have infringed the copyrights of some of the largest music publishers in the business. The lawsuit came after US District Judge Kimba Wood ruled that Limewire had wrongfully assisted users in sharing digital recordings and ordered Limewire to shutter its operations in October.

Now Limewire LLC, the firm that operated the network, has come to an agreement with the publishers behind the lawsuit, which include EMI, Sony Corporation and Vivendi. While the details of the deal were not made public, the publishers dismissed their claims against Mark Gorton, the founder of Limewire and as the case was dismissed with prejudice, it cannot be brought to court again.

Although Limewire has managed to settle with 30 publishers, 13 record companies have also sued Limewire. Record companies such as Atlantic, BMG Music, Sony BMG, Virgin and Warner Brothers are pursuing Limewire for copyright infringement.

Record companies own the copyrights to recordings, as opposed to publishers who own copyrights to the songs. The multiplicity of copyright ownership gives you an insight into how much money the music industry makes off the backs of the artists. The record companies will get their day in court on 2 May.

If the music industry companies were smart rather than greedy, they would have realised that rather than suing Limewire into oblivion they could have worked with it as a distribution channel for their recordings.

Even if Limewire settles with the record companies, it is highly unlikely the service will ever reappear in anything like its previous form. µ

It will end soon

The label companies should hold on tightly to their little kingdoms. Kodak and Polaroid are classics of what Digital did to a "Little" kingdom. Their patent should have read; "anything that conveys an image." That way they could have sued everyone that has a digital camera. lol... Next on the list of kingdom busters is the oil cartel. Their own greed will force people to get around the can holding troll at the gate. The kingdoms will fall and I can't say it will happen soon enough.

good point

Good point Bob... then they should lock up all those car manufacturers because they distribute products that people use to break the law by speeding. Some people even kill other people with their product... and that wouldn't happen if the court system told them to cease and desist distribution of their law breakin' 'Death Machines'... by the way... speaking of death, shouldn't gun manufacturers, by the same line of thinking all be receiving lethal injections somewhere as we speak, since they do distribute a product with which any human being could use illegally?

It's amazing what money can buy... some say justice, others might say FREEDOM DESTROYING

I HAVENT BOUGHT A CD IN 15 YEARS

15 YEARS OR MORE. NOPE AND I DONT PAY FOR ITUNES OR OTHER ONLINE VENDORS EITHER.
SO I DONT KNOW HOW MUCH MONEY THERE ACTUALLY IS TO FIGHT OVER, BUT WHATEVER THERE IS, NONE OF IT WAS CONTRIBUTED FROM THE LIKES OF ME.

It's all good

It's good that they shut Limewire down and that they are having to pay for their crimes. Long prison sentences should also be mandatory.
