Youview will release an API after 14 April

But the set-top box is still delayed to 2012

MUCH DELAYED Internet telly widget Youview will release its Application Programming Interface (API) details for manufacturers that want to use a subset of its features.

Probably because Youview will not launch until sometime in 2012, the API release will follow the expected 14 April publication of the final core technical specifications. Youview is expected to be launched as a set-top box, but it could be incorporated into other products.

According to Broadband TV, Youview CEO Richard Halton told the Digital TV Group (DTG) 2011 summit on Friday, "at this point it will cross refer to the D Book and once D Book 7 is published we will reference that. Our aim is to have a publication as thin as possible."

Previous releases of the Youview specification have only been made available to the DTG. The new version will also be included as part of a revamped Industry Zone on the Youview website.

Halton also mentioned that a working Youview prototype will be available by the end of the year for trials. µ
