STORAGE VENDOR Thecus has introduced what it claims is its "extremely speedy" XXX network attached storage (NAS) range of boxes.
Thecus tells us to "remember those three letters" because its XXX NAS range will "make you reconsider the way you see the NAS world". That might be so but the product shots still show a rectangular box just like every other NAS on the market, however inside Thecus has loaded its XXX models with pretty decent hardware.
Like many other NAS vendors, Thecus has plumped for an Intel Atom chip. All the XXX units, from the two drive consumer oriented N2200XXX to the eight drive enterprise oriented N8200XXX use the Intel Atom D525 chip. Similarly all models have a 1GB DDR3 SODIMM RAM module.
Thecus says the hardware allows its XXX drives to achieve in excess of 100MB/sec transfer rates. The firm ships all of its XXX boxes with web and FTP servers enabled, along with photo sharing and backup software. They also have support for iSCSI connections.
The beefy specifications should make the units particularly interesting for modders who like to replace the stock software with full blown Linux distributions. The ability to push 100MB/sec is particularly handy as it means users can stream Blu-ray video without worrying about dropping frames.
Thecus has not released pricing for its XXX range of NAS boxes yet. µ
