FLUMMOXED READERS of The INQUIRER still can't accept that Steve Jobs hasn't added a USB port and Flash support to his Ipad 2.
The fruit themed company's walled garden approach doesn't stop people from defecting to Android and anyone with technology knowledge who cares to do so can jailbreak their Ithing anyway.
So Jobs' Mob continues in this vein, proving that Einstein was right when he said, "The definition of madness is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result."
The result of this for The INQUIRER poll, "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest Ipad of them all?" is that 36 per cent of respondents identified USB and Flash support as what they had wanted from the Ipad 2 announcement. Another 33 per cent simply responded "Meh".
In the poll, drawing jointly third at 11 per cent were the responses "Who cares if it's thinner it is still a drinks tray" and "I am selling an organ to buy one". The last response's popularity among a tenth of respondents might be surprising, coming from INQUIRER readers, but they didn't stipulate whose organ. "I don't need Facetime with a fanboi" came last out of the responses with 10 per cent.
The problem that no USB or Flash support presents for Apple, if it wants to maintain its 93 per cent market share of the tablet sector, is clear, because it isn't only INQUIRER readers that think these omissions on Apple's part are unfortunate. And the author has direct experience of this.
Talking to non-technical friends who were enthusiastically considering buying the Ipad at Christmas, their enthusiasm died instantly when it was pointed out that the device doesn't have a USB port and it won't show most videos on the Internet because it doesn't support Flash. µ
Flash drains battery fast.
Apple does not wanna replace a lot of iPads during warranty period because users watched a lot of Flash videos.
Think of the name of a popular well-known PC software that has been around for a long time that uses the most of your desktop PC's CPU and system memory when it's running. Did you think of Adobe Photoshop? Adobe has been king of hogging computer resources for a long time. Adobe, don't try to do that on devices that have little batteries. Common. Get real.
Re Android Mandroid:
Only Apple could get away with "launching" the tablet market without an SD card slot in their product. The adapter is a sticking plaster fix, who wants that permenantly attached? It's a deal breaker for me.
The discussion between flash and non flash is a rubbish one.
Flash works in any OS and a lot of websites use it.
That Ipad/pod can't use it is simply stupid.
If you have a device that can do Internet it better do most of the protocols used.
As it doesn't, the Ipod/pad suck, it's that simple.
Can't even replace Safari with Firefox and that sucks even more.
Silverlight = always DRM and spyware
Flash = optional DRM and spyware
HTML5 = no DRM = no acceptance eventually.
Why settle for flash when you can use open standards such as html5?
Don't see much of a difference in that respect between Silverlight and Flash, at least the Silverlight toolset is nice.
Realistically the only alternatives to flash I regularly come across are propriety MS crap things like WMV/ASF/silverlight(yuck)
As unless he/she/other isn't remotely numerate then calling a minority a majority is just some useless clickbaiting.
“it won't show most videos on the Internet”???
Either you're a paid Flash propagandist, or just woefully out of date.

“A whopping 63 percent of all videos on the Web are now HTML5-compatible, compared to only 10 percent just a year ago”
I have been "using" the Ipod for some time now. And it's pretty useless and costly.
Websites load bad, no flash.
Wifi it pretty bad, connections drop all the time a few meters away from the router.
After about 15 minutes your wrists start to hurt by holding it.
And this is just the Ipod, no way I'm going to buy an Ipad.
I prefer a latop with Linux, cheaper and far better, combined with an SSD it also lasts for hours and hours without power.
BTW, Android is just another Linux :-)
Well, it can safely download an app without it including a Trojan, for a start.
But the comparison isn't fair. There's one (well, two) iPads - a handful of different models, and one OS. There are dozens of android models from several manufacturers, and different versions of android. Android wasn't even built as a tablet OS. But then neither was iOS.
What makes me laugh though is micrsoft. Their tablet OS will apparently be ready in august 2012. What a joke! They're going to be so late to the party they'll miss the Next Big Thing (whatever that is).
COMPUTERS SERVE PEOPLE, AND IF THE IPAD AND IPAD2 IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU THEN THAT'S JUST FINE BY ME. THAT DOESNT BUG ME IN THE SLIGHTEST.
dont forget, the android market is wide open, like people love, so here we have 50 droid apps that are able to text premium rate numbers and rack up a humongous phone bill. great, but not in the apple world. I for one, welcome the closed approach apple has adopted, screen every app, making sure its safe, in response to mitchell, you can indeed slap out your SD card from your camera and shove it up the ipads rear, subject to a small fee to buy the required adaptor, and before you tell me theres a cost involved, id rather have an adaptor than have a 5 inch thick (exaggerated) tablet to accommodate an sd card reader.
i wonder if you posted this so i could tell you this about the ipad.
no bragging here about the ipad, but think about what you post, get your facts straight before you start pressing buttons.
The lack of Flash is a killer what good is the iPad when 30% of websites cant be viewed on the iPad properly. Fail.
The lack of a memory slot is a killer for me. Its just stupid I should be able to pull the memory card out of my Camera and slap it in the iPad. The people who run out of memory and have to sell their iPad and buy a new one with more memory you that will get old and people will stop buying into the hype of Apple. Look at iPhone sales on Verizon its horrendous.
Apple needs to rethink this the Android Tablets are close to being as good as the iPad and less annoying/limited.
The HP and Rim tablets will be here soon too and in the same price range. Next year Microsoft will have a touchpad OS worthy of a tablet.
Sure the iPad has a great user interface but lacks too much and the competition is closing in.
If you want to brag about the iPad please tell me what it can do that an Android tablet doesn't? All you will be able to say is a few apps that haven't been ported yet but otherwise the Android tablets do more and are less restrictive.
INQUIRER readers will be waiting a long time. Apple will not ever be bringing Flash to the iPad. The web is also changing quickly non flash alternatives are rolling out fast.
If apple ever brings another port to the iPad it will be Thunderbolt and maybe then you can hook up your USB device.
INQUIRER readers "welcome to the future, gone are the days of the dos prompt".

In my experience, "normal folk" never have a "regular usb back up device".
Backing up the iPad (i.e: synching it to a PC/Mac thought iTunes) is no more complicated than plugging in a USB cable and backing up to any other storage device. With the added benefit that, if the host machine is itself backed up, then there are effectively 3 copies of the data in existence at any one time (iPad PC Back Up drive).
I'll admit it now. I'm a PC person. I work mainly with Windows OS and desktop PCs. My job is in IT Consultancy and Support. I don't use Macs, don't support Macs and don't have an iphone (or indeed any type of smartphone). I use an Ipod shuffle and hate iTunes (not a good application at all!).
I have very little interest in owning a Mac or an iPhone and firmly believe that a PC can do everything that a Mac can do for less money.
I was recently given an Ipad (v.1) as a gift. I love it! I've been able to watch most of the videos that I want to watch and I sync it with the PC to transfer files (ie: I plug in a cable - much as I would a USB connection).
Once must remember that this kind of device isn't a PC or a laptop - it's something different. Not better nor worse, just different.
For me, the compact size and portability is key - It seems odd to spend money on an iPad and then hook it up to a usb keyboard and mouse (hint: laptops are much cheaper if that's what you want).
With regard to Flash - is it really that brilliant? I'm not convinced, and some sites are already offering non-flash alternative content.
To complain that it doesn't have/do what a PC has/does is a bit like buying a telly and moaning that it doesn't have a microwave oven.
What next? "INQUIRER readers are still waiting for BSOD on the Ipad"?
Normal folk get disappointed by the iPad when they learn its limits. Unable to backup to their regular usb backup device. Need to connect to a pc-itunes to perform some tasks, etc.
Android tablets are going to be better, just a shame that within 6 months Apple won't provide strong competition and Google will be dominant.
The complete failure of Microsoft is incredible but not a surprise considering how badly they have performed over the past 3 years.
Nerds have nerd friends. Normal folk don't like computers (of any make), and put up with them because email and the web are useful. normal folk don't give a toss about USB ports or arguments about Flash. They just appreciate something that feels simpler to use than a PC. Which is why they're not rushing out and buying Xooms and Galaxy Tabs and the like.
Thought you'd have got that by now.
