SOFTWARE BEHEMOTH Microsoft is going to come to the tablet operating system market very late if it is true that the release date will be in about September of next year.
By then Ipad 3 will likely be out or imminent with whatever version of IOS it will have, Google's Android 3.0 Honeycomb will probably be on version 4 or later by then and any number of other as yet unknown competitors could have arrived.
According to Bloomberg, "Microsoft... won't release a competitor to Apple Inc. and Google Inc.'s tablet operating systems until the 2012 back-to-school season. Public testing of a new version of Windows will begin at the end of this year."
The INQUIRER reported that Dell is planning to have a Windows 8 tablet next year and demonstrations of Windows 8 have been expected to tip up this June. But a September 2012 release is going to see the Vole's tablet OS land late, just like its Windows Phone.
Windows Phone is now bumping along the bottom of the market, way behind Google's Android, Apple's IOS and even Nokia's soon to be dead Symbian. Microsoft more than likely doomed itself in the tablet market when it ditched the Courier. The failure to launch a tablet or even an OS this year is going to be a significant milestone for the histories that will be written of Microsoft's failings. µ
Um, I’m quite old and my memory may be failing, but I do recall writing code for and using a tablet PC in 1995, windows 3.11 for pen computing, not a bad bit of kit. I then recall writing code for, and using one of the first windows CE devices in the UK, 96/97 I think; that was stylus driven as well.
Having said this, you’ve got to admire Apple marketing machine, it does seem powerful enough to change the earth’s reality field. Fortunately I’m wearing a tin foil hat so I’ve not succumbed to the distortion field effect… must send wonderful Nexus One back and buy Iphone 4, must send Nexus One back and buy Iphone 4, must buy iPhone 4, must buy iPhone 4 and magical iPad…..
Well I for one am willing to wait, because I want to be able to install the internet onto my tablet and browse the web and point and click and cut and paste and multitask and do all of the things that are so DIFFICULT if not IMPOSSIBLE to do with any other product.

It really will not surprise me if Steve Ballmer is shown the door and soon.
With the resources they have, these kinds of disasters are just not to be believed.
They could do better to just hire 30 new guys, lock them in a building, hoist a pirate flag and ....
