BLOGGING WEBSITE Wordpress.com suffered a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack yesterday due to what could have been a politically motivated campaign, but it resumed services by the end of the day.
Starting at the beginning of the day users found the website very slow and upon investigation Wordpress staff discovered it was under attack. By mid afternoon Wordpress tweeted that it was "battling a non-trivial DDoS attack".
That fight continued beyond the end of the working day. At 8pm GMT yesterday the site tweeted, "Our systems are back to normal. We'll continue to monitor them and post updates here if needed."
No more updates were posted from the website that hosts 25 million blogs. According to V3.co.uk a foreign-language blog the website was hosting was targeted in the attack, suggesting that the motive was political and that a campaign to undermine it was underway.
In February 2010 Wordpress' website was down for two hours, affecting 10 million of its 20 plus million blogs. µ
That's a lot of blogs, but it keeps them off the streets I guess.
