ONLINE RETAILER Amazon says it will check the integrity of Android applications and sell them.
According to V3, Amazon's app store will have a full range of applications that have been tested to make sure they are secure. The store might open this month.
"Our goal is to ensure customers have a good experience with the apps they buy from us - and to protect customers from malware and other harmful situations," Aaron Rubenson, category leader for the Amazon Appstore told V3.co.uk.
He added that the Appstore will have the industry standard 30 per cent commission on applications sold, or 20 per cent of the list price, whichever is greater. Developers will also get tracking tools so they can monitor sales.
After the recent problems Google has had with malware infesting Android apps on its market the commitment by Amazon to verify the apps is a necessity. Amazon launched its Appstore Developer Program in January. µ
That is, if Amazon says that a program is good, you can still buy the same program from Android Market. And for the same price, it seems, so you may as well buy from Amazon after all.
However, a well organised gang could for instance kidnap loved ones of the "Wobbly Bosoms" developers and force them to release a new edition with malware. Amazon presumably would hope to detect that as well, Android Market perhaps not.
I think it's most likely that they will offer an app on the market for install. I would also expect them to partner with cell phone and tablet retailers to bundle the app directly onto the products before they are sold.
I wonder how Amazon will distribute these checked apps. It'd have to be a dedicated app just to distribute, because I tell you one thing, I won't be going onto Amazon.co.uk and saving apk files all over my mobile when I can just go through the market.
