Lighter, thinner Ipad 2 has dual core chip, two cameras

Comes in white
Wed Mar 02 2011, 18:26

STEVE JOBS has announced a completely redesigned Ipad in the Ipad 2 with a new, secret dual-core processor called the A5 at Apple's event in San Francisco this evening.

According to The New York Times live blog, the Ipad 2 has 720p capture capable front and VGA rear facing video cameras as expected, it is 8.8mm thick, is 1.3lb heavy, has a gyroscope, comes in white and black, and it will ship with AT&T and Verizon in the US. It will also have a new version of Apple's mobile OS, IOS 4.3, along with an HDMI output that can output 1080p.

It will ship in the UK on 25 March, will sell for $499 for the 16GB WiFi only version with the price rising to $829 for the 64GB 3G and WiFi model. For a few dollars more you can buy the HDMI cable for $39 and a cover for another $39 that fits in place using magnets. The $39 cover is polyurethane but there is a more expensive $69 leather version. Both types have a range of colours. The covers are instead of the case that the Ipad 1 has.

Ipad 2 is said by Jobs to have a 10 hour battery life, like the first Ipad, and Jobs claims that the A5, while twice as fast as the first Ipad's A4 chip, uses no more power. The display is 9.7-inches and like the original Ipad it is a LED-backlit LCD screen.

Apple's press release quotes Jobs, ""With more than 15 million Ipads sold, Ipad has defined an entirely new category of mobile devices."

The statement goes on to explain that the Ipad 2 IOS 4.3 will provide a faster version of the Safari web browser, an improved Airplay with mute and screen rotation lock options and a personal hotspot feature where there is an accompanying Iphone 4.

Facetime calls can also be made to other Ipads, Ipods and Macs. And there is HSUPA support for enhanced 3G upload speeds with AT&T. µ

lol don't be silly its nothing like colour tele. Colour broadcasts are still picked up by B&W TVs.

What it is akin to is those 100HZ TVs. Nobody will broadcast at 100 fps because then most people wont watch it. To cover the majority of people you have to broadcast at 25fps which makes 100 fps tvs rather irrelevant.

With computers there has always been a point to speed increases in that it increases functionality. I've never seen an ipad struggle with apps and for the reasons above devs wont make apps that an ipad1 would struggle with, it would not be profitable.

OMGANAPPLEBURNIT!!

I got an iPad to read books. More specifically text books. Anything smaller than the iPad's size just doesn't cut it for those type of books. Since I got it I don't have to lug around any heavy books when I travel. Of course I could do the same with a laptop, but it is nowhere near as convenient, and I never liked reading books on my laptop anyway.

There are many situations in which a tablet is just plain better than a laptop. Apple has made a great tablet (I wish it had a higher resolution though). It's too bad you guys never see past the Apple sticker.

@ Steve T

And you know for a fact it has A9 cores & SGX543 gfx?? I'm pretty sure none of this info has been released.

And of course you cna prove it's faster than a Xoom too cant you???

Also are you really trying to tell us that Apples' 20% more apps than Android is hugely larger & by enlarge all really usefull? How many apps do you have on your i-devices??

Honestly the fanbois reeks out of you.

@Bertrand

You can't have been looking very hard, screen resolution is stated perfectly clearly in the spec list on Apple's web site.

Twin Cortex A9 CPUs @1GHz and what is probably twin SGX543mp graphics cores are mediocre? Tegra 2 (as in the Xoom) can't match that to start with. Slimmer, lighter and cheaper than the Xoom while beating it on battery life is mediocre?

Apple have done what they need to do. They've updated the hardware to, at worst, get specs near the competition. Better industrial design and a hugely larger software catalogue (people buy in to software first, hardware second. You could produce hardware way better than all the competition, but fail to sell more than a handful to techies if the software isn't up to snuff) will do the rest.

Apple have done what they needed to do

It's magic...

... which is probably the reason that they are mum on most of the specs like screen resolution.. hard to explain to the non initiated why the Ipad's mediocre specs are so much better than the competitions... only the fanbois understand why and they just need to be told it's magical...

@ranger

If the rest of the world followed your thinking, they would still be broadcasting in Black and white, becuase at the time, there were more Black and white tvs than colour!

Jesus wept how can you be so stupid!!!

Limited market

Everyone i know that wanted or had use for a tablet already owns one. I see a limited market unless they introduce a huge range of new features, not just slightly faster processor and higher res cameras. Nobody in their right mind would make their app so power hungry that i requires ipad2 hardware because the majority of the market is, and will be for quite some time, the original ipad/iphones. I fail to see the point or strategy of this release.

fanboys at large

@ Audun - QFT

Poncy fanboys with douchebag hair (aka EMO) are going to be prancing around with iPADs whilst listening to Justin Bieber at the Regent Street store and each new buyer is going to get two rounds of applause outside...

You can just feel that coming ...

@Jester

You do realize that the people who are buying these iPad thingies range from the great unwashed to corporate types.

I guess you're just a hater. Ah well.

@Bill

You touched on the problem with all of Apple's toys. They don't need to improve them, because the fanboys who paid however-many-hundred for version one a couple of months ago will happily throw their gadget away and part with more money for a device that is no better/marginally better. Apparently the shiny apple logo on the back is worth it, I've never been convinced.

Too Heavy

I think they should have focused on weight rather than thickness. Everyone that I know already puts the thing in some sort of case as it is so they will not really be able to tell a difference in the thickness - which is big in % terms, but small in absolute terms. Until they address the weight/10" size issue, this product will continue to be niche segment of the market targeted at people that already own 1-2 other Apple products.
