OVERCLOCK the AMD Radeon HD6990 to 1.2Ghz, but AMD has warned that you'll want to have water cooling.
Announcing the latest in its line of Radeon HD6900 series graphics cards, AMD said the HD6990 boasts more of most resources. It has a 40nm scale GPU core with a clock speed of 830MHz, 192 texture units, 4GB of DDR5 memory and 3072 stream processors.
For gamers AMD is making big claims of up to 200 per cent performance improvement over Nvidia's GTX580, which no doubt Nvidia would want to dispute. What detail we are given on this performance includes stats like up to 80fps with an Eyefinity set up using multiple screens for games such as Left for Dead 2.
Talking of gaming AMD, in a remarkable achievement of time travel said, "As of March 25, 2011, the AMD Radeon HD 6990 scores X3303 in 3DMark 11, the highest single graphics card score achieved to date."
While warning about overclocking and recommending water cooling, Chimpzilla is also claiming 8 per cent better thermal performance with the HD6990. Perhaps this has to do with the "20 per cent more air flow" factoid that AMD claims for the HD6990 card, and this is as good a bet as any.
Like other Radeon HD6900 series graphics cards the HD6990 comes with a dual bios and the new Windows-like Catalyst Control Centre. Through the Catalyst Control Centre you can also have morphological anti-aliasing, if you fancy. µ
What a jip.699.00 thats a hundred over the hd 5970 when it was released. The only reason it is this high, is the fact that there is no competitive card out there. An extra 2 gigs doesn't cost a hundred dollars.
So 2x6970s for £440? in a word - UNBEATABLE
or spend more and get 2 580's for some AMD busting scores.
The focus is this is fastest SINGLE card, who cares about cost - it's THE FASTEST
of course you can get faster solutions or they'd say FASTEST GRAPHICS SOLUTION
when you start saying "for this much money", well what if i have £10 less.... or £10 lesser or ....
This might be really impressive, but the bottom line says it is not.
IF AMD managed to put this baby on 32nm then they would have something really spectacular...but they couldn't.
Buy two 6950s for £220 each, cheaper than a single 6990 & slightly more powerful.
Additionally 2x6950s will consume LESS power & generate LESS noise.
If you really wanna make sure it's the better deal, apply BIOS mod to both 6950s to make them 6970s.
So 2x6970s for £440? in a word - UNBEATABLE.
Wow just like the 5970 this is the new king of Graphics Cards.
I lough at those who say these cards have 2x GPUs and therefore it is unfair to compare them.... Well who cares what is inside them, they performe better, consume less power and are cheaper... so what more could you ask for?
I dont know how GPU works, or what it is... so why do i care it has 2x or 7x or 1x of them in it???

Well the tests are out and when you use AA/AF it seems it's 1.7 times as fast as a single 580.
But keep in mind that this beast has 2 GPU's so it might be considered a slightly unfair comparison by some.
