OPEN SOURCE WEB BROWSER OUTFIT Mozilla has released one more update for Firefox 3.6 before concentrating on getting Firefox 4 out the door.
Mozilla has been rolling out Firefox 3.6 web browser updates regularly but the Firefox 3.6.14 release might be the last one. The release was initially due in mid-February but some stubborn bugs held up the update, so Firefox 3.6.14 was finally released yesterday.
Mozilla lists 41 patches for all versions of Firefox 3.6. The version update to 3.6.14 adds no more than security and stability updates as Mozzarella's development team is spending most of its time handling the beta release of Firefox 4.0.
Firefox 3.6.14 patches 10 vulnerabilities in total and Mozilla lists eight of those as critical. Those vulnerabilities could be exploited to run attack code and install software without the need for punters to click on dodgy malware links or accept downloads of .exe files anywhere.
The company also patched 11 updates in 3.6.13 with nine listed as critical and a whole swathe of patches for earlier versions of Firefox 3.6.
Mozilla also released an updated version of its desktop email client Thunderbird 3.1. Like the Firefox 3.6.14 release, it's only a stability update and can be downloaded now.
Back in March 2010 The INQURIER reported that Mozilla said it would put Firefox 3.0 to bed as the company transitioned to supporting Firefox 3.6. Then last week Mozilla released the final Firefox 4 Beta, which can be downloaded from its website. That adds new tab locations and other features, and the browser has been optimised for faster performance. µ
Version 3.6.15 was released today. The version released on the 2nd was flawed and totally messed up Java. The program would freeze up every 10 minutes. Surprising how nobody is reporting this. Whatever happened to beta testing?
Is it not obvious that Firefox having yet another release every five minutes is just attention seeking?
They're now ignored on the merits of their browser because Chrome, Safari, IE9 and Opera do more, support more standards, have better security records and therefore already take up all the column inches available.
So they've resorted to constantly releasing betas and press releases about far-flung future versions that don't even exist yet. That way, they can talk about the features that are already in other browsers as though they're at a competitive level already.
Mark my words, with Firefox 4 on the way, 3.6.15 will be out very soon after this bug fix, and I wouldn't be surprised if we see another one within a couple of weeks in order to get headlines.
Haha Mozzarella.
