SOFTWARE FLOGGER Microsoft is reportedly working on a Windows 8 tablet design demo for late in the second quarter.
The Vole leaked news of hardware developments for its next churn of Windows. The company hasn't even announced that it's working on Windows 8 yet but a reliable source told Business Insider it will be showing tablet designs this June.
The same tipster also claimed that Microsoft will copy Apple's user interface, binning the current Windows 7 look, which was based on Windows XP Media Centre PCs from way back in 2004. The Vole should know that a lot can happen in technology in seven years but it's apparently been doing nothing very useful to address the breakout tablet PC market segment for almost a full year now.
Microsoft killed its Courier folding tablet last April. Although that looked like a decent bit of kit, it didn't have an OS optimised for tablets. Windows 7 isn't built for tablets, which hit the market long after the company developed that user interface in 2004.
This last year Apple, Google, Research In Motion and even HP have been leading the charge with tablet specific operating systems, so Microsoft has a lot of catching up to do.
The Windows 8 tablet leak this week backs up another leak from Dell a couple of weeks ago. The INQUIRER reported that Dell managed to leave a roadmap laying around that was sent to Android Central by a tipster. It appears there is a Dell Windows 8 tablet scheduled for release in 2012. µ
Well I would certainly hope so. Anyone who wastes their time with one of those tablets with non-Micr0$uck$ Operating System knows that they can't install the internet onto those tablets, or browse the web, or cut and paste, or multitask, or any of the things that are so DIFFICULT if not IMPOSSIBLE to do with any other software.
Give me my LoseDose 8!
TAKE AN UNDERPERFORMING NETBOOK, SUBTRACT KEYBOARD, REPLACE WITH TOUCHSCREEN, AND VOILA THERE IS A TABLET.
BUT WAIT THERES MORE. BECAUSE IT CANT RUN A REAL OPERATING SYSTEM, IT ALSO CANT RUN ANY PROGRAM YOU CURRENTLY OWN. SO YOU HAVE TO BUY ALL NEW PROGRAMS FOR IT AT CONSIDERABLE COST.
I'LL GET A TABLET THE MOMENT THEY HAVE ENOUGH POWER TO RUN A PROPER OS AND LOSE THE FAD PRICING.
Microsoft may have owned the tablet market, but there really wasn't any. Until Apple came along and created it, anyway. Simply by putting software on it that was designed for a tablet the first place.
That's what Apple does best. Make shit actually work.
The author is wrong; tablets were available for purchase long before Microsoft wrote Windows 7. Tablets have been available for years, ever since laptops and touchscreens were invented.
The problem was you had to run Windows on those tablets, so no one wasted their money on them. Tablets were not popular until Apple managed to write a useful OS for reasonably-priced tablets.
Microsoft owned the tablet market for decades, but lost it because they couldn't write decent software for tablets. Apple writes better software, so they get to own the tablet market now.
Microsoft was displaying all the supposed future "Slates" last year, hoping to spread some FUD before the iPAD was released.
The iPad came , saw and kicked all the ass around, and the rest of the market is still trying to compete a year later!
YOU ARE THE MONG!
There was no Win 8 announcement, you mong.
Courier was never announced, you mong.
You are a mong.
At least when Apple announces a tablet (eg iPad2), it is immediately released to the public to buy.
With Microsoft, you get these annual vapourware announcements. Announcements of products that don't exist. Things for the future, which never get released in the end.
Every year CEO Ballmer stands up at the CES expo and gives embarrassing keynotes about Microsoft tablets. But they never come.
The Microsoft Courier tablet is another example. Got axed before it got released.
Microsoft has twiddled its thumbs for so long that it has no hope in either mobile phones or tablets.
