Three quarters of INQUIRER readers think Nokia's Windows Phone link up is pointless

Poll confirms what everyone knows
Mon Feb 28 2011, 18:23

NOKIA'S CEO Stephen Elop might want to take note of this, as The INQUIRER's readers have decided it is a bad move by the Nokia CEO and one-time Microsoft executive to make his last employer's Windows Phone operating system his company's strategic plan.

They think it is so bad that in our latest poll, which just happens to follow Nokia's own poll on its strategic decision, 77 per cent of the respondents so far have indicated that they think that Nokia's Windows Phone strategy for smartphones is a very bad idea indeed.

The question was, "What's exciting about Nokia's deal to become Microsoft's smartphone OEM?" In their responses, 77 per cent of INQUIRER readers chose either "Nothing, it's just stupid" or "It's just Android versus Iphone now".

The latter response is a reference to Elop's claim on 11 February that there is now a three horse race in smartphones - Apple's IOS, Google's Android and Microsoft's Windows Phone. But our readers know better.

The responses to the poll's question that saw a paltry 23 per cent appear to accept the suicidal decision by Elop were, "Windows Phone 7 user interface and features", "Windows desktop and Microsoft Office integration" and "Silverlight, Internet Explorer 9, Outlook, Xbox games". However we suspect that those responding to Silverlight and IE9 might have been chortling at the likely problems that might arise.

If Microsoft can't even get its pre-update update right, whatever hope is there for it getting anything else right any time soon? Most of our readers would probably say, "Nothing, it's just stupid." µ

The wisdom of crowds?

To regard the collective responses of those Inquirer readers who respond to an online poll as of value is optimistic, to say the least - judging by the loony comments that most INQ articles attract, anyway.

Most responses are going to be based on wild speculation, as it's really too soon to see what might actually emerge from the alliance.

Really?

Strange one. Nokia has more users worldwide than Apple or Android. I'm currently using an Android device, after getting eternally frustrated by my ip4. Quite happy with it, but still frustrated by the camera, internal memory and poor media syncing options. Looking at the N8 I see fantastic hardware with So-so software - symbian 3 is a dramatic improvement over previous efforts. A Nokia/microsoft collaboration has me very curious, and I'm amazed that there are people out there who regard it as "pointless". I'm in.

Slow news day huh ?

Updates caused some issues. As if it hasn't happened with Apple and with Android, case in point the Android 2.3.3 release for NEXUS. The WP7 OS works well and people who try it like it. Will it unseat IOS or Android, I think not. It works well, MS did the right thing in specifying minimum hardware requirements, and if you don't like it, don't worry, other people will.

Not pointless at all

Even if the least Microsoft accomplishes with its ELOP.w32 corporate virus attack is to decimate the largest phone company in the world (which just happened to previously only sell open-source based products), you can see this would still be a win for Microsoft.

They have invested nothing, and possibly rid themselves of Elop, while Nokia is going down in flames of mismanagement. Microsoft only cares about Microsoft.

It would be great if their plan is to reduce Nokia (NOK) to a penny stock and then try to buy it up, only to have Intel, Google or some other open-source-friendly company step in, outbid them, and toss all the WP7 plans in the garbage where they belong.

But as far as things sit right now, I suspect Mr. Ballmer is happy with this latest underhanded manipulation of a former competitor.

Steaming pile

Windoze fone 7 is a turd. A stinky rotten turd, just like every mobile version of windows before it. Nokia didn't chose it for any technical reasons, they chose it because Microsoft made it financially attractive, i.e. they're giving it to Nokia almost for free, and giving huge financial kick-backs to the nokia board of directors. Bribery by any other name. Microsoft knows the current market is Android vs. IOS, so just like in the peecee world, they gain market share by cramming it down peoples throats. Make it pre-installed by default, forcing the user to buy it. And like Netscape vs. IE, they gain market share by giving the product for free, eliminating their competition. Nokia was their only chance to accomplish this and they pounced on it. Ah, good old Microshoft, some things just never change!! But a turd is a turd, no matter how you market it.

3/4 of readers are fools

... or Apple / Google apologists, which are the same things anyway.

Duh

It so obvious I don't understand the point of this article. Nokia wants their users to be able to install the internet onto their phones and be able to browse the web and point and click and cut and paste and multitask and do all of the things are DIFFICULT if not IMPOSSIBLE to do with any other product. Give me my LoseDoze Fone7!

NOKIA ISNT ALLOWED TO SELL WHAT PEOPLE WANT

THE HUMOR BEHIDN THIS STORY, THAT INQ IS CAPITALIZING ON, IS THAT NOKIA ISNT ALLOWED TO SELL WHAT PEOPLE WANT. BOARD OF DIRECTORS SHOULD BE STEAMING MAD AT THAT AND DEMANDING ACTION, BUT THERE IS THE IRONY - THEY ARENT ALLOWED TO DO THAT, EITHER.
ACTUALLY PRETTY MUCH NO COMPANY IS ALLOWED TO SELL WHAT PEOPLE WANT TO BUY.
AND THATS BECAUSE THE VERY STRUCTURE OF CORPORATIONS WHICH REWARDS SNEAKY DIABOLICAL EXECUTIVES WHO FOCUS ON THEIR OWN CAREER NEEDS INSTEAD OF SIMPLY PROVIDING WHAT THE CUSTOMER WANTS.
SAME THING WITH GOVERNMENT, SEE QADAFFY IN LIBYA. YOUD THINK HED DO WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT, BUT HES NOT ALLOWED TO DO THAT, HED BE REMOVED QUICK FOR DOING THAT. TOO MANY OTHER POWER PLAYERS HAVE TO GET PAID FIRST BEFORE CITIZENRY IS ALLOWED TO GET WHAT THEY WANT.
FUNDAMENTAL STRUCTURE IS FLAWED, HMM WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT.
STAGGERING OPPORTUNITY FOR ANYBODY PREPARED TO SELL CUSTOMERS WHAT THEY WANT, EXCEPT FOR THAT ENORMOUS COST OF ENTRY.
