ONLINE PAYMENTS SERVICE Paypal has quickly restored service to a legal defence fund for the alleged Wikileaks whistleblower Bradley Manning, having briefly disabled the account.
The firm, which said that it would prefer not to discuss such matters in public, posted a blog in which it said that it felt compelled to comment because it was accused of things that it was not guilty of.
One of these things, it seems, is being 'evil', as the firm was reacting to a press statement from Manning supporters that leads in with the following: "Evil Paypal cuts service to Courage To Resist for Bradley Manning support", which is hardly one for the firm's press clippings folder.
The open letter from the Bradley Manning Support Network said that Paypal had decided to axe the fund for no good reason and without proper explanation.
"We've been in discussions with Paypal for weeks, and by their own admission there's no legal obligation for them to close down our account," said Loraine Reitman of the Bradley Manning Support Network. "This was an internal policy decision by Paypal."
The Support Network pulled no punches and warned other non-profit organisations against dealing with a company that rides roughshod over their activities and it, claimed, demanded the right to withdraw funds from its account.
"They opted to apply an exceptional hurdle for us to clear in order to continue as a customer, whereas we have clearly provided the legally required information and verification. I think our dealings with Paypal should be a cautionary tale for any possibly controversial not-for-profit entity with a Paypal account," added the Support Network's Jeff Paterson.
"While there may be no legal obligation to provide services, there is an ethical obligation. By shutting out legitimate nonprofit activity, Paypal shows itself to be morally bankrupt."
Paypal painted a different picture and said that rather than being a hurdle, the issue at hand was actually a procedural one that would apply to any user.
"Let me be clear, this decision had nothing to do with WikiLeaks," said Anuj Nayar, director of communications at the payment firm.
"We recently placed a temporary limitation of the Courage to Resist organisation's Paypal account as they had not complied to our stated policy requiring non profits to associate a bank account with their Paypal account... To be clear: Paypal cannot take such action without the authorisation of an account holder, nor does it ever take such unauthorised actions."
Paypal has since returned service to the fund. µ
There is no doubt Manning will be convicted for treason so all the ballyhooing and mis-directed hostility is a waste of energy. As ye sow, so shall ye reap. He made his choices and now he will be held accountable. Denial doesn't change anything.
Thanatos and Paul - you are the traitors. By your incitement against Manning, you are traitors to the US ideals of democracy, rule of law, and the freedom from excessive government rights to imprison suspects without trial.
Therefore, by your own logic, you should yourselves be imprisoned, and deserve no defense. Furthermore, you should not be permitted access the internet to post contrary views, since you might convert other, more easily misled citizens, to your dangerously treasonous viewpoints.
You are anti-American traitors and you deserve to rot in prison. Anyone who comes to your aid or assistance is also a traitor. You lost your rights to be treated fairly as soon as you started spouting your treasonous nonsense.
of every member of the military to denounce corruption or bad conduct of his?her superiors. It is part of the Oath they take.
I don't think people have reached the level of stupidity required to not know paypal is in fact what is classically described as 'evil'.
Or do they?
Sorry, but you are wrong.
Paypal is supposed to be a bank as it has signed the charter in Luxembourg. A bank, once it has accepted a customer's money, has the obligation to provide full service to the customer in the management of the money it is entrusted with, unless there is a court order to the contrary.
It is not because Paypal is an Internet service that this rule is changed.
The truth is that Paypal disregards this obligation whenever it suits it, which clearly demonstrates that it is not worthy of being called a bank.
Besides which, I'd really like to see what you do when Paypal decides that it suspends your account without explanation or reason. Somehow, I doubt you'll take it as well as you mock others.
George Washington was a traitor and should rot in prison. So were all the scientists who left Germany during WWII instead of helping Hitler build an atom bomb. And so on, and so on...
I guess some people enjoy being deceived and used as cannon fodder by their own government (and the corporations that control it).
Yes, the guy is an idiot. But if that was a crime, half the population would be in jail.
Oh, and by the way, it's not at all clear that any of Manning's actions falls under the USA's legal definition of "treason" (which is limited by the Constitution).
Did Fox News shut down early or something?
Seriously, if you know nothing and care less about the abuses being done in your name, why do you so desperately need to hate on those who at least try to retain some semblance of humanity and refuse to "just follow orders"?
When it all goes to shit, just remember: you got the government you deserved.
For those who are not aware Pvt. Manning committed his act of Treason while serving in the Military. As such is subject to Military Law and Justice. The Military Justice system is not subject to the external justice system present in the US. The declaration of innocent until proven guilty does not apply. While ideally this would be nice this is not how the "Uniform Code of Military Justice" is applied. Truthfully the young Pvt should be counting his blessings they haven't convicted him yet as acts of Treason during times of war are punishable by death, in particular acts of treason that place fellow soldiers in harms way.
Some here may be inspired by the actions of totalitarian regimes of the 20th century and prefer the accused to be shot without trial. But, fortunately, rule of law prevails in this nation and one is Innocent until proven guilty and convicted by a Jury of his peers. As Pvt. Manning has, as of now, not been convicted by a Jury of his Peers, thus for the time being he is Innocent under the law and deserving of the support of every citizen who respects the rule of law.
There is no defense for being an idiot and traitor to your country. I hope this guy rots in prison.
Paypal is under no obligation to provide service to anyone. They can refrain for any reason what so ever. It's not unethical at all of them to decline to provide service. They are free to pick and chose who they want to provide service to or not.
Regardless of the purported justifications that were presented in defense of Bradley Manning, he is a traitor to the United States. He does not deserve any defense presented for him due to the simple fact that he has taken an action that revealed information that was not his to disclose in the first place. The information was disclosed in order to achieve a measurable revenge against the United States Army. This man is pathetic example of humanity and not a saint, patriot or freedom fighter.
