A RESEARCH STUDY conducted by Continental Tyres suggests that people who play computer video driving games regularly are more likely to be worse drivers out on the real roads.
If we believe these claims, then lovers of games like Need for Speed and Formula 1 are more likely to do things like crash, run red lights, suffer from road rage and get pulled over by the police.
A total of 2,000 motorists aged between 17 and 39 were quizzed about their driving habits and attitudes. Half of them were regular gamers and half were non-gamers.
We should spare a thought for the non-gamers out there, as the study found that gamers are twice as likely to scare others. The non-gamers reportedly fear the possibility that gamers might repeat their on-screen antics on the real roads.
The survey didn't entirely have it in for gamers, though. It said that non-gamers required more attempts to pass their driving test and caused twice as many prangs to their own cars.
Tim Bailey, safety expert for Continental Tyres said, "It seems that while gamers develop useful skills and are more confident, they need to apply some balance with a sensible assessment of risk." µ
I don't even crash half as much in real life as I do in GTA4.
just what games are we talking about here, the arcade racers such as burnout and hot pursuit or sim games such as GT or forza.
personally i found that playing Gt improves my situational awareness.
to quote the old adage: there are lies, damm lies and statistics.
These comments about women gaming less and driving less are not based on the current situation I understand from figures I hear thrown around these days.
Mind you women play different kinds of games, and probably less racing games I suspect.
"Causality
Men tend to play games more than women.
Men tend to drive more than women.
Those who drive more have greater exposure to risk, hence be involved in more bad events (all else equal)."
I will add Men also have Testosterone and that makes us also more prone to do more dangerous things as well as road rage. So what, all i see women doing when they drive is talk on the dam phone not something the average guy is doing we don't tend to talk as much.
Seems to me a dumb survey.
What is the difference?
If you say gamers crash more often, how is that not also a prang. How can you then say that non gamers prang more often. What are the numbers?
It makes no sense. Do you make this stuff up to get a reaction ?
MY GAME DU JOUR IS BURNOUT PARADISE, THE LATEST STUNT IM WORKING ON IS TO STRING TOGETHER 20 BURNOUTS IN A ROW BEFORE WRECKING. BEST IVE DONE TO DATE IS 18.
BUT LAST WEEK IN REAL LIFE (IRL) I GOT SIDE SWIPED BY A FELLOW MOTORIST WHO AFTER HITTING, PROCEEDED TO RUN. ORDINARILY I WOULD HIT MY BOOST AND DO A BURNOUT TAKEDOWN, PREFERABLY ON THE OVERPASS, & WATCH HIS BURNT OUT WRECK FALL ONTO THE TRAFFIC BELOW, BUT INSTEAD I CHOSE TO PULL OVER & CALL THE COPS ON MY HATED CELL. 1 HOUR LATER I GOT ATTENDED TO, AND NOW BUDDY IS FACING CRIM CHARGES WHEREAS I GET TO WRITE MY CAR OFF & ALSO DECLARE MY BURNOUT PARADISE REPETITIVE STRESS INJURY (RSI) AS A CLAIMABLE SOFT TISSUE INJURY AND GET SOME FREE PHYSIO. HOT DOGGITY DIG.

Unfortunately, we don't have a link to the report, so we've no idea how the age distribution breaks down. One wonders, however, how the gaming population correlates to the age distribution (i.e. younger, less experienced drivers generally tend to play more games as well).

Therefore, gamers are indeed more likely to come unstuck!
