APPLE FANBOIS buying Ipads were responsible for 93 per cent of all the 4.5 million tablets sold in the third quarter of 2010.
Beancounters at ABI Research found that Ipad punters bought almost all the tablets shifted last Autumn. Despite the fact most of us are living in a recession, Apple users apparently still have enough cash to spend it on overpriced shiny toys.
Dubbed media tablets by ABI Research, the hardware category has taken everyone by surprise as tablets are no longer scorned by consumers and the mostly bought by businesses. The industry analyst house said the media tablets are a "promising new talent" with million already having been sold to fashion conscious fad followers.
But it's easy enough to understand how Apple Ipad sales made up 93 per cent of tablets sold. For a start Apple didn't have any competition in the consumer tablet field and its netbook without a keyboard device went unanswered for several months by RIM, Google, and others.
"Over time, Apple's first-to-market Ipad advantage will inevitably erode to some extent," said ABI Research senior practice director Jeff Orr.
Since the statistics were collated over six months ago, that competitive gap has been filled by RIM's Playbook and Samsung's Galaxy Tab. Apple's Ipad lead will also be dented further when vendors have Google's Android Honeycomb OS on their tablets. Android has already shifted massive numbers and will compete on a level-playing field as it does with Iphones when Google's tablet-based OS starts to appear on shipping products.
It is rumoured that Apple will return to the market with the Ipad 2 on 2 March. µ
For those whining about there being no competition, this is why Apple is as successful as they are (and I'm not a fan as I prefer to wait and buy a cheaper version from someone else who is a year late to market).
They identify a niche in the market get a product out there first (or near first) which may not have all the functionality of future competitor products but get it entrenched in the market at a favorable (high) price and create a brand. They then come out with a 2nd version which addresses most of what they missed at about the time the competition is getting their stuff out.
Their products don't typically have all the features and capability of others, but quite frankly 90% of the buying public doesn't need that extra functionality or capability and prefers something that is easy to use.
Again not a fan and I own no Apple products, but I don't get the hatred (envy?) of Apple.
Pretty sad they dont have 100% considering there isn't any actual tablet competitors yet.
Android 3.0 isnt out yet and thats a Tablet version of Android.
Android 2.2/2.3 etc is a Phone based OS that some places have ported to a tablet. Its a great phone os but only a good Tablet OS. Thats what 3.0 is about.
Microsoft doesn't have a tablet OS yet not until maybe next year.
Blackberry isn't ready to release their tablet yet.
HP is almost ready to ship their Tablet with WebOS.
I dont see how anyone can brag about being 93% in a field where they should be 100%. I think with all the competition coming people will choose a tablet thats able to surf more than 20% of the internet because other tablets will support flash while the iPad wont.
I'd like to see some data on how much time these alleged "business" customers use their iPads for gaming as opposed to business use.
I haven't yet seen somebody in public using one of these things who wasn't playing a game, watching a video, etc.
Um, the actual calculation is about 60% being iPads. Inq forgets that the iPad was NOT the first tablet.
I think Inq is being the Apple Fanboi.
Or...
"93% of tablet owners are still figuring out what the heck that thing does"
because Android is fail, they are not taking it seriously and it's far from refined enough to seriously compete with iOS.
Kick it up or continue to fail, like INQ's failed reporting. Fanboilol.
I have an Advent Vega, one would think from reading the press that only the Galaxy Tab exists. I'm quite happy with it but really want to see it running Android 3.0, so I perhaps should have waited 6 months.
Well now theres a suprise someone is an apple hater. Theres probably a good reason they sold alot, it might be down the the fact that they are rather damn good?
yet another terrible article
The author fails to admit that very few Galaxy Tabs were sold. Even Samsung has admitted this. As for Playbook, gimme a break. RIM has been talking about this for months and has yet to ship anything.
Tablet data that's more than 6 months old is ancient history, and renders this article almost completely redundant. Poor show.
A bit confused by the whole Apple fanbois having all this money to buy the tablets, when the truth (printed in your own article) "...mostly bought by businesses...".
Apple made a convenient wireless notepad which businesses latched onto quickly as an alternative to regular notepads. Not because of great functionality, but just enough functionality to do the job (basically, it's just a mobile kiosk).
In regards to the article title...duh. How many shipping options were really out there during that quarter? Verizon / Motorola has overpriced the Xoom product. You won't see serious competition for a few months (at least). Write a real article on this subject when it matters..Q2 or Q3 this year.
Cannot believe you missed an opportunity for a different headline for this article. Knowing INQ I'm gobsmacked the headline wasn't:
"93% of Tablet owners are wrong"
TL:DR.
O RLY, you start and article with 'Fanbois' and your credibility just flops. My ipad came free with an Android phone, it is a very good device for consuming not so good for creating. My android phone is alright, it's a very good device for making telephone calls. So whats my 'label' then, am I Switzerland?
So last year lots of ipads were sold, there wasn't much competition so this year they might not have such a big market share. NOT Sh1t Scheeeeeerlock.
