AMD supports Microsoft’s Windows 7 SP1 with ATI FirePro

Graphics go virtual
Wed Feb 23 2011, 12:04

CHIP DESIGNER AMD will support Microsoft's Windows 7 SP1 RemoteFX feature with its ATI Firepro graphics card.

RemoteFX will use a virtualised graphics processing unit (GPU), which is where AMD's ATI Firepro comes into play. A GPU on a remote desktop virtualisation host server will allow management of desktops and applications for remote desktop users. This will keeps data secure on the host server whilst end users won't require expensive graphics devices to enjoy enhanced user environments.

Host support for video, 3D applications and demanding graphics content will mean that multiple remote users will gain the experience of using a highly capable graphics machine but in a virtual desktop infrastructure on various remote devices.

"These workplace professionals can access rich media, including full-motion video, on connected remote devices such as thin clients," claimed Janet Matsuda, general manager of AMD professional graphics. µ

all cards

Yes, ATI Firepro will be supported by RemoteFX. What about all the other 3D cards?

Yes, all graphic stacks are supported. I wonder why only this one is mentioned.

BTW And Yes I do Know

And yes I do know this is about the remote desktop experience...

But AMD, lower the bar...and you too Nvidia. Do like Google, at least put it in Beta, and use everyone's feedback to improve it down the chain.

What about the Consumer?

Why the heck do they hold back this functionality from consumers and cordon off such wonderous functionality for the pro-sumers. The cunsumer market would find interesting ways and give feedback for improvement of these new tech. I think if you buy a videocard for 500+ you should be able to get the same functionality on the OS that supports it. Shame on AMD for holding out on us. I want better virtualized GPU... it is the first steps into better virtualization for the desktop. And one of the things holding us back from having a virtual environment for gaming and other environments for dev, content creation etc. and get the power of the GPU on each.
