Microsoft says Optimus 7 users should not attempt Windows Phone 7 update

The update is not delightful
Tue Feb 22 2011, 17:16

WINDOWS PHONE 7 handsets are having trouble with the very first update and the most affected phone seems to be the LG Optimus 7.

On the Vole's "Microsoft Answers" Windows Phone 7 forum, a Windows Phone 7 support staff member admits that there are some issues being reported with "some devices" and that Microsoft is investigating.

The failure of the first update, which does not even provide any new features for users, is another embarrassment for Microsoft after low sales of Windows Phone 7 handsets and media criticism that the mobile OS was unfinished on launch.

The forum has postings from individuals with Optimus 7 handsets so it is not clear what other devices the support staff member is referring to. The reports on the forum however all tell a similar story.

One LG Optimus 7 user, named Zkuggi, posted the following, "When I try to update my LG Optimus 7 through ZUNE software i get stuck in part6/10. Then the phone restarts, and ZUNE cancels the update and returns error: 801812C1. What does this error mean? How can I bypass it?"

Forum moderator and Windows Phone 7 support staff member Martin V. tells Zkuggi, "We would recommend at this time, not to retry the update, as subsequent attempts will probably fail similarly. While we continue to investigate the issue, we would ask that you not attempt the update until your device alerts you of another update opportunity. There are some issues reported with some devices and Microsoft is investigating the root cause."

Martin V. then goes on to ask Zkuggi to provide details of the phone, such as phone model and operator, country, the error code and what Zkuggi's computer's operating system is.

The update problem will also be embarrassing for Nokia CEO Stephen Elop who announced on 11 February that his company will switch to Windows Phone as its strategic smartphone OS. That decision will now only be questioned further. µ

No problem w/ Samsung Focus

As Nick mentioned, the SW updated then the phone. It seems the issue is unique to a particular phone. In general, the clean, simple UI make the phone a breeze to use. I'm looking fwd. to the updates.

That's funny...

I updated my Optimus 7 last night. It seemed to go fine.

To the people talking about latest Zune software: FWIW the SW forced me to update it before the phone. It did not give me the option of screwing that up.

@Zune plays taps for WP7

Except you can link it with iTunes and perform all the same functions as an Apple user!!

As for the users not having the latest Zune software, it seems pretty poor not to alert the user instead of letting them proceed with an out of date copy of Zune, but MS aren't the first company to have this kind of issue.

I had no end of trouble getting my HTC Hero updated due to bad software and incomplete instructions!

I am so much happier with WP7 than I was with Android! Only OS that comes close to WP7 is WebOS and I don't think I would go back to that at this point either!

@JonB

Since when did a user ever read the instructions? If the desktop software is such an integral part to the phone update, maybe the update should be aware of a minimum software version to use, hmm?

WP7 update

My Samsung updated with no issues. And MS stressed you had to have the latest version of the Zune software. If the update wouldn't take, then it 's a MS issue. If the update bricked the phone, again, it's a MS issue that they'll have to deal with. I do agree with LB about the hardware specs, if you're that Draconian then you should be able to make an update that does NOT trash the deivce.

HTC Mozart is now updated

Had the same problem on HTC Mozart. Got Error 801812C1 during update step 6 (it seems update of a Windows 7 driver for the fone failed).
Shut down the phone and took out the battery, reinserted battery and booted.
After reconnect with Zune on the PC, the update came up again and the update ran without problems.

This is just shilly

The author of this article is correct in that this "WP7 update" has problems (counter to those Microsoft employees posting that "the issue has been resolved/is the user's fault").

What kind of software quality assurance process allows phones to be bricked if the user "does not update Zune software first"? Answer: Microsoft quality control! And the poster above is correct: some phones are being "bricked".

So if you are thinking of buying a WP7 phone, you might as well save some money, go down to the local building supply store, and buy yourself a nice red brick.

Bricked phones

This "update" is apparently also bricking phones (in addition to just failing to load).

Is it so refreshingly original that WP7 users MUST install and update Microsoft Zune software ONLY on their "Windows only" PC's (if you run IOS or Linux you are out of luck), in order to be led to the trough, "just like" Apple's Itunes, only to be left with a useless brick. How rewarding for the small number of customers who placed their trust in Microsoft.

users should be embarassed

The instructions SHOW CLEARLY...
That the zune program on the desktop needs to be up-to-date.

If it isnt, it won't work.

Picnic = problem in chair not in computer

That went well..NOT

What was the point of the incredibly restricted hardware specs if it still doesn't prevent this kind of problem ?

Relax...

... it sounds like you embarrass easily. Never seen a phone update misfire before?
