HARDWARE MAKER Sony launched its Vaio S Series laptop earlier today in London just round the corner from The INQUIRER towers.
The laptop was showcased alongside some other new Sony products, some of which were in garish colours. The Vaio S Series is a much more down to earth matt black 13.3-inch aluminium notebook.
In the video above a Sony spokesperson shows us what the machine has to offer, including fast boot, though you won't see that as the laptop was already turned on. It also has a dedicated web button that apparently gets you online in 15 seconds without booting into Windows, although you won't see that either as it wasn't working. µ
How long before they decide to steal paid-for functionality like they did with the PS3? As soon as the "express warranty" runs out, as they argue in the class action suit against them? Or will they just sue people who learn how to jailbreak it so they can run a better opsys -- like George Hotz?
Or will the system CD root the box, like they did with their music CD content? If I root your box, I go to jail, they root uncountable thousands, and pay a minor fine to just one state.
Yeah, I'm waiting in line to buy something from that outfit....NOT.
Of course, see groklaw.net for more on all this, it's hot news just now.
Gotta give then credit for adopting a business model like this -- rather than innovating in any meaningful way -- wow, they have the guts to take real risks! Let's make sure it pays off for them the way it should -- failure.
