Buffalo debuts USB 3.0 external multi-drives

Up to 12TB if you can wait until some time later this year

US STORAGE OUTFIT Buffalo has launched a couple of external USB 3.0 multi-drives.

Buffalo reckons its Drivestation Duo and Drivestation Quad multi-drives are for home or small office users who need big capacity and fast data transfers. That's almost everyone in these days of Gigabytes of multi-media content and fast broadband so they should have a fairly wide audience.

Both drives are pre-formatted to they can be connected immediately and punters don't need to install any software drivers to use them. They have a removable front panel so the drives can be whipped out quickly if they need replacing and the green environmentally friendly box gets a tick. The drives also have an auto-power function so they turn off when the PC they are hooked up to is shut down, reducing power use.

The Drivestation Duo comes in a choice of storage capacities including 2TB, 4TB and 6TB. It supports RAID 1 mirroring for redundant storage and RAID 0 striping for performance. It can also be a two-drive, two-bay Direct Attached Storage setup.

The DriveStation Quad is a four-drive, four-bay Direct Attached Storage setup. It supports RAID 0 striping but also supports RAID 5 or 10 for redundant storage. It's out now with 4TB and 8TB storage capacities and Buffalo will also be a adding a 12TB model some time later on this year.

The Drivestation Duo and Drivestation Quad come with Novastor Novabackup Business Essentials and Securelockmobile, which encrypts your personal data.

Except for the 12TB version of the Drivestation Quad, all models are available to buy now but Buffalo didn't tell us how much any of the units cost. µ

Pre-formatting in what format?

Is it the Volish NTFS or the ultra-cool dude-who-killed-his-wife-but-I-forget-the-dude's-name format?

What size disks?

After reading the whole article it still neglects to mention what size disks this takes. Even on Buffalo's site and PDF it neglects to state the size. A photo on the site makes it *look* like its 2.5 inch disk's but it must be 3.5, as there are no 2tb 2.5 disks yet. And some indication of the price, I do have a wedding to pay for!
