MAKER OF SHINY TOYS Apple won't be bringing out a smaller, less expensive version of the Iphone any time soon, but it is working on ways of making future devices cheaper.
A report at the New York Times poured cold water on rumours that Apple is developing a smaller Iphone, citing a source who said that making it smaller doesn't necessarily make it less expensive to develop. Apps might also have to be redeveloped with a smaller screen, which the cappuccino company obviously would want to avoid.
But the evidence indicates that Apple is working on making ways to make headway in markets where Android has started to gain market share. A cheaper version of the Iphone will come through less expensive components, but you should consider that Apple already does this by dropping the price of older Iphone models once a new one hits the market.
To reach wider markets though, Apple will have to offer a model that is affordable without a contract, and that is a tough task. And of course, if you are part of the cult of Steve Jobs, you might not be happy with a model that many Apple fanbois would consider inferior.
But the smartphone market gets tougher every year, with Mobile World Congress showing off a range of Android devices that will eat into Apple's market share. It will be very interesting to see how the next versions of the Iphone and Ipad match up. µ
Apple can certainly make a cheap iPhone without a contract and still turn a profit. They were turning a profit with a $200 contract phone when the technology was new and they can turn a profit with a free contract phone and a 200 dollar no contract phone.
But why would they do that when they can force fruittards to pay 100 dollars for a chunk of NAND they could buy for $15 if the iphone had an SD slot.
Apple is all about control and squeezing every cent out of every aspect of their operation. I think this will eventually be their undoing, but only when other companies wake up and go for the volume instead of going for the margins they see Crapple getting.
Capple could restart their iBone sales by simply adding in Adobe Flash support to their Phones and Maxipads.
It would help if you could ROOT your iDevices as well, but having to be tied down to that Dinosaur called iTunes for all things not iPod related and, having to suck every other piece of crap up...
Is a bit of a deal breaker, don't ya' think?
...from day #1. No way will Apple offer a cheaper version, for multiple reasons.
Just look at the recent 'clarification' of their Mafia-like, er, bargain-priced deal with providers of iPad App Store content. I firmly believe Steve Jobs is not a particularly money-hungry fellow. However, that's not to suggest he's not acquisitive and it's pretty clear his enormous ego finds expression in a compulsive need to keep score...and money helps, on both counts.
BTW: I love the nearby 'related items' headlines, from March of last year:
"Popularity is killing Android"
LMAO Thanks for the heads-up, kids. Almost a full year (and many, many millions of happy Android users) later, there's still no let up in the FUD from Apple chauvinists, Microsoft sycophants, and cheesy tech-writers.
Competitive, not cheaper, based on optimized net margin, and cannibalization prevention.
Maybe they'll just create a new niche with a hybrid product.
