Cyber hackers from China attack the Canadians

International espionage
Thu Feb 17 2011, 11:27

THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT has fallen victim to a cyber attack that has been traced back to China.

A report at CBC News said that the attack gave hackers access to highly classified information and forced two departments off the Internet. Although the attack came from China, it was not known whether the attackers were actually Chinese or the attack was just routed through the country.

The hackers were reported to have penetrated the Finance Department and Treasury Board, getting as far as taking control of senior government officials' computers. All Internet access had to be shut down so the attackers couldn't steal information.

There's no way to say if the Chinese government had any involvement. But this isn't the first time that attacks from China have hit government computers around the world, providing evidence that an international spy network exists.

Google also had some much publicised trouble in China last year, with the company threatening to leave the market amid accusations of state sponsored hacking.

The Chinese government denied accusations that it was responsible, but the whistleblowing website Wikileaks revealed that the US government was virtually certain that the Chinese state was behind the hacking campaign.

It would be very easy to blame the Chinese government for these attacks, and there's a chance it could have been simply cyber criminals looking to get lucky. µ

They ain't looking for tech

I doubt the Chinese are looking for tech info. More proof that the only good hacker is dead.

Why bother?

Why bother getting Canada's secrets? We've always been 2 years behind everyone else...

Today's technology here in Canada is what was available 2 years ago elsewhere. The Chinese just have to look at their old US/UK/... logs.

Is it really the Chinese

It is so easy to get access to open proxies based in China that it is unfair to assume that although the last visible hop has come from China that the intent was a Chinese Citizen.

For a long time now, I have harbored the belief that the Chinese Govt allows open proxies within their walls so that hackers can use them to gain animosity. What I believe they are then doing is watching how the hackers are compromising sites and systems and then replicating the attack. Similar to a honeypot.

It is time for the Chinese to come clean about the proxies and come clean about where the attacks originate from. The only other option is to drop packets from Chinese IP's unless they are pre-approved.
