MWC: GSMA gives duff Iphone 4 'best phone' gong

Ignores GSM faults to award the title
Wed Feb 16 2011, 16:22

A DUFF GSM ANTENNA wasn't enough to prevent the GSM Association (GSMA) from awarding Apple's Iphone 4 the title of 'best mobile device of 2011' at Mobile World Congress.

At an awards ceremony hosted by overpaid twit Jonathan Ross, the GSMA decided to give its top award to a device that can't even maintain a GSM connection while being held.

Apple had to fend off competition from HTC's Desire, LG's Optimus, Research in Motion's Blackberry Torch 9800 and Samsung's Galaxy S. Of course none of those had any problems with maintaining a GSM signal, so perhaps the Iphone 4 won by default.

Now we assume Ross didn't have a say on which phone walked away with the gong, but given the absurdity of the GSMA to reward failure on its own turf, who knows what could win in the future. If you consider all of the other things that don't have particularly good GSM reception, it makes you wonder if a turnip will be in the running for the GSMA's 2012 best phone award.

Do you agree with the GSMA's decision to give Apple's Iphone 4 the best phone nod, or do you think it would be better handed to a device that doesn't lose reception if you touch it? µ

As if...

As if the GSMA would be stupid enough to select the winners themselves. The judging is carried out by a large panel of experts, from analysts to tech journalists and bloggers. I believe the vote was so close they gave a special commendation to the second placed handset (HTC Desire). Quite easy to research this btw...

What exactly were they judging?

As a "phone" it's simple. The Blackberry wins it.

As a feature device it's a close call between the Desire and the Galaxy S, but would give a slight edge to the Desire due to Sense.

As an overpriced fashion item that's a win for the Iphone4. As a phone the 3GS was far superior. The 4 is just marketting fluff and fashion. Guess it goes to show how borked the GSMA judging is.

The Spirit of Today

It is a fact that in today’s society, the “role models” are not based on how smart they are, or how many things they accomplice in the world, or how much good they made instead of bad. NO. Today the “cool” guy is the one who have the Ferrari, 10 houses, 1 wife and 20 girlfriends, at least one 20 feet boat, a lot of money “of course” and devices with a fruit symbol on them. What he did to have all these, is a matter of small importance.
iPhone is a decent phone, but, like everything else, it has problems. I am not the one who will say if it is the best or not. I can not blame some one that what to have a piece of the cool’s guy fame, despite the moral of the thing. I can not blame the people that sick of today’s “coolness”/ stup@#$%ty and try to show the flaws in every way.
I know one thing iPhone it may be the device that sells more devices from every other device and because I stop believe in coincidences and fairness long time ago I will say iPhone 4 is a choice.

Well yeah

It's the best phone you can buy. Some phones do this or that better than the iPhone, but over all it's still the one to beat.

I'm not defending my purchase either. I own a Droid X. The Droid X hardware is pretty solid, unfortunately Android 2.2 is a clusterfuck. Yes, Android is fun to play around with. Even so, I don't know how anyone in their right mind would call it better than iOS.

Obviously the bias comes from you

@deraildoax:
Next time you want to criticize someone about being biased, it might be best to leave out the whole bit about how you're obviously completely biased against anyone who owns an Apple product.

I *do* own an iphone 4 and I *have* seen the signal strength change based on how I hold it (I have it hacked to show decibel strength numbers instead of bars), but I can't say that it's actually made any difference in the actual operation of the phone, but it probably would for people who are on the very edges of having a signal (and my signal is not very strong either).

However, it's also very clear that this was something completely blown out of proportion by the media. You're right in your sentiment that the media should simply report on the facts, but those days are long gone. Now they have to create a frenzy over any little thing they think will gather them page views. So when the media is the one who manufactured the story in the first place, it really is their responsibility to correct it, or at least drop it. If they don't, readers can certainly call them out for it.

Who's biased?

Well my brain thinks who is more biased? A news source or someone who is defending their purchase? The likelihood that a consumer is defending one of their purchases is very likely. Its just human nature. Not to mention the very common Apple bias that is bred into most iSheep. So really the job to prove the case falls on your shoulders and not the media outlets. Sadly the stereotype of the Apple owner having more money than sense is very true.

Here we go again...

Could it possibly be that the iPhone 4's reception issues were just a tad exaggerated by the let's-make-a-story media? D'you think? Given that no matter which way I hold mine, it's impossible to affect the bars, and I've had much better reception than from my 3GS. But that doesn't fit the story you want, does it?
