Mozilla rips Internet Explorer 9

It's not a modern browser
Wed Feb 16 2011, 10:54

A BLOKE at Mozilla has launched an attack on Internet Explorer 9, calling it "not a modern browser" and "two years too late".

Paul Rouget, Mozilla technical evangelist, began a blog post by rubbishing Microsoft's claims that test results showed IE9 supported 99 per cent of the HTML5 specification. He said the Vole used the tests to design and develop the browser, so it would have been shocking for IE9 not to score nearly 100 per cent.

He said, "These tests are not here to give you an overview of how well your browser supports web standards. They aren't meant to give balanced results."

Rouget could also point to the fact we aren't likely to see the final version of HTML5 until 2014, so these results are kind of academic, as there will be new browser versions out by then.

Rouget also claimed that IE9 is two years late in coming out with new tags, SVG and some CSS3. He then said that IE9 is not a modern browser, listing a slew of features that IE9 doesn't support, such as an offline application cache and drag-and-drop from the desktop.

While it's entertaining to see the browser makers argue about who is more standards compliant, Mozilla and Microsoft should also be keeping their eyes on the upstart that's catching up in marketshare, Google's Chrome. µ

Opera???

The only issue with IE is speed. IE has much more security in there than just blocking sites and popups. I love how every browser speed test comparison is Java heavy too. Sure the browser with no security is going to be faster at Java pages.

OPERA??? OPERA???
Its 2011 where is Private Mode on OPERA?

HTML5 - Its still 2-3 years out and is set to be finalized in 2014.

Chrome - Because I want Google to know everything I ever do.

Firefox - I love it but has frame issues and sadly some sites still use them. I should blame the sites for not getting away from bad habits but firefox hasn't fixed the issue either.

@biggles1000 + others

@Tim Staffell - Firefox bloated? Just look at the 35+MB download for GC/Safari. Opera 11 is 7+MB and FF4 is about 11+MB

@biggles1000 - Want a download manager, look at downthemall! download manager and accelerator.

Look at adblock plus too, as ads are a scourge. Also, Ghostery plugin is nice but breaks some facebook apps and probably other stuff.

IRC can be added to Firefox too. I use web dev tools for which FF is about the only tool for the job, with plenty of checking against IE6/7/8/9, GC, Safari(Mac) and iPad.

Not to mention all the extensions, which are lacking from IE altogether (forget Active X).

@zio winston - Well let's forget about spec. all together then and everyone can do whatever they like then and forget about standards because they don't matter eh? ;-)

By the way, box-shadow CCS3 property only works in final wording form in FF4b11 from my recent testing and deployment.

bah

I used to use firefox as my primary browser, but now I use Chrome, FF, and IE9 (web development). IE9 is fast and clean. I don't like the compatibility view stuff, but it does let all the web pages work.

The HTML 5 stuff isn't microsoft's fault anyways. That's apples fault, they're the ones who started the big push for everybody to implement something that's not a standard yet. In the name of openness, when really they just didn't want flash.

I still like FF the best, but to say IE9 is 2 years behind is not true. I'm sure it is in some ways but it's also ahead in others. At the end of the day, they're all improving.

Firefox: Yes.. IE, Opera & Chrome: Nope

I've experimented with many browsers over the years but I have always stuck with Firefox since it's been out. I will admit that when I gave FF 4 beta a try, I didn't like it too much and uninstalled it. I can't remember exactly what the problem was.. some bug, I think.. but it was a beta.

As for Chrome, I've tried to use it a few times, but totally disliked it because one of the MAIN PROBLEMS I had was... when starting up the browser, it would never SAVE my preferred font size. I had to always manually adjusted it every time I used it.. and that just plain sucked to me. Yeah, that was when it first came out.. I have no idea if it still does that or not.

I gave Opera a shot a couple of times, but I just didn't like it that much.. It just didn't feel right to me.

One thing I will say is... I will avoid IE at all costs.

Chrome for the win

I used to swear by IE a few years ago, then I switched to firefox and now I won't use anything but Google Chrome. All browsers have some issues, but I find that Chrome has the least issues, and wow... is it fast!

Mozilla is a piece of solid excrement

Take a look at the following link:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=78414

One of the top 100 bugs, open and unresolved for 10 years!!!

If you do a search, you will find a lot of such bugs there.

Mozilla developers and evangelists are a bunch of arrogant hypocrites.

Firefoxed

I haven't got much time for IE, as it's gone off my radar. I used to use Firefox, but, my God, talk about Bloated. Too right, Chrome, and by association, Safari. If you use anything else, you're nuts!

Before rushing off to Opera

Read their browser forum first.
Not seamless folks.
None of them are.

hm, I that that was Opera's job??

-- moaning about other browser companies getting too much exposure/ misusing their position/ breaking all 'standards'... :)

and yes, the brainless do need reminding that you can do much more, much faster & easier... and guess who is NO 1 in europe??

offline application cache

.... very useful 15 years ago.

I won't rip the hairs off my head because it's missing (and also because I'd have a hard time finding hair....)

seriously...

good that someone's finally calling MS's bluff, but has no-one heard of opera? I'm not trying to start a browser flame war, but firefox is rather bulky, chrome has too little and IE is basically... terrible. Opera is a browsing 'powerhouse'. Awesome download management, pretty good email and IRC support, it is perfect for anyone with a reasonable-ish computer
