Apple's Iphone 5 will have a 4-inch display, say industry sources

Dangerously close to 7-inches
Tue Feb 15 2011, 17:04

SHINY TOY MAKER Apple's Iphone 5 will be bigger, if rumours coming out of Asia are to believed.

The reliably unreliable Digitimes is reporting that its Asian sources slaving away in the dark satanic mills of mainland China producing Steve Jobs' shiny toys will now have to heft around boxes of heavier Iphones.

The reason The INQUIRER somewhat doubts this claim is, beyond the terrible grammar, because Digitimes says, "Apple is interesting in expanding the screen size to 4-inches to support the tablet PC market."

We don't know what four is in Taiwanese but its pretty certain that a 4-inch device is not a tablet unless Jobs thinks he can destroy the demand for 5-inch and 7-inch devices by offering a powerful device that is just a tad smaller.

Having used 5-inch and 7-inch devices, this doesn't sound like a strategy for success to us. While 4-inches does give a much more comfortable viewing experience than the various 3 point something inches displays out there, 5-inch and especially 7-inch displays are simply that much more comfortable compared to 4-inch screens.

Having trashed that claim The INQUIRER would not want to be left out of the herd-like instinct behind most Apple related reporting, so we declare that Iphone 5 could easily be white. µ

Size matters

As I have previously commented, the issue with size is everyone over a "certain age". Buying power tends to increase with age.

SJ copped a load of stick for his comments regarding the optimal sizing of tablet (based on something so arcane as research) and the competitors immediately all hurried to announce/release smaller ones, because in the electronics business, smaller is better - right?

I seem to have noticed over the past year, that a lot of manufacturers have released 10" models.

Am I deluded?

Obvious!

The iPhone 5 will have a 1024 x 768 display, i.e. 28% bigger, i.e. 3.96 inches.

Why? Because that is the resolution of the iPad. So iPhone will be able to run all the iPad apps and there will be a unified software development resolution.

Ah, quite appropos then

Apple will increase the screen size on the iPhone to be the same size as the average Apple wanker's tackle.

Yes, I did indeed go there.

nano

Supposedly the Iphone nano is half the size of the iphone, which seemed too small. So if you make the iphone bigger, the nano would end up at a more reasonable size.

Grammar?

Speaking of grammar, the author could learn to distinguish between its and it's: "what four is in Taiwanese but its pretty certain"

Terrible grammar

The Inquirer making fun of the 'terrible grammar', hahaha. Yeah right, that was a good one.

I think there is truth to this

I can already hear the marketing claims

"Apple releases the largest screen ever* and revolutionizes the industry"

* On an Iphone

In all seriousness, Jobs has been clear that he does not see a need for 7" devices but clearly sees the need for a 10" device. My belief is that he wants to make that statement reality by pushing up the screen size to a point where 7" offers a little bit better, but not a giant leap in functionality compared to an Iphone. It makes the sale easier on the 10" device in a lot of ways.

As it stands - the consumer will already be forced to carry 2 devices, the phone form factor is not going away. If the 4" screen is enough to do 85% of what you need to do while mobile, then the utility of a 7" device is drastically reduced as the consumer will simply not want to carry it around. Meanwhile, the 10" device offers a whole different usage model. In my take, Apple is trying to take away the 'mobility' advantage of the 7" devices by making it redundant because at the end of the day, the Ipad is not a mobile device, it is used by and large inside the home.

As anecdotal proof - ask any current EVO owner if they plan to buy a Galaxy Tab. The EVO makes the Tab a redundant as device as both are clearly targeted for 'outside the home content consumption'. Fundamentally, the Ipad is a different beast.
