CHIP DESIGNER AMD has announced five Opteron 6100 series processors that have 8 and 12 cores for immediate availability.
Designed for low-power balanced systems for small and medium sized businesses and increased performance-per-dollar-per-watt for large organisations, the five products are the 6132, 6140, 6166, 6176 and 6180 chips.
These processors are socket-compatible with the AMD Opteron 6000 Series platform, as will be Chimpzilla's upcoming "Bulldozer" 16-core based Opteron processors.
The 6132 has a Thermal Power Design (TDP) of 65W, a clock speed of 2.2GHz and eight cores. The other eight core Opteron 6100 series processor is the 6140, which has a TDP of 80W and a clock speed of 2.6GHz.
The 12-core Opteron 6100 series processors are the 6166, 6176 and 6180. The 6166 has a 65W TDP and the slowest clock speed at 1.8GHz, despite having 12 cores. The 6176 has an 80w TDP and runs at 2.3GHz, and last of all the 6180 has a whopping TDP of 105W and cycles at 2.5GHz.
Unsurprisingly, Patrick Patla, VP and general manager of AMD's server business was gushing about the products and said, "These new server CPUs deliver greater performance than we've ever had before." Chimpzilla has also announced that Acer, Dell and HP are refreshing their server product lines with its five new processors. µ
