Viewsonic unveils a smartphone and a tablet

Dual-SIM and dual-boot
Fri Feb 11 2011, 14:52

HARDWARE MAKER Viewsonic has announced a dual-SIM Android smartphone and a dual-boot tablet device.

Since it announced it was getting into the tablet market last year, Viewsonic has kept releases coming thick and fast. This time, the company will be unveiling its dual-SIM Android smartphone and a dual-boot Windows and Android tablet at Mobile World Congress in sunny Barcelona, Spain.

The V350 smartphone has a 3.5-inch screen and will be running Android 2.2 'Froyo'. The dual-SIM means it can run off two network services simultaneously so it can be used for both personal and business calls. Of course that means no more racking up personal calls on the company bill so it's not all good news.

The smartphone will have an HVGA capacitive touch screen, which could be either a 480x320, 480x272 or 640x240 resolution, but Viewsonic hasn't said what the aspect ratio will be so we can't tell you for sure. It will also have a 5MP camera, a memory card slot for Micro-SDs, assisted GPS navigation, Bluetooth 2.1 and WiFi. Again Viewsonic hasn't disclosed the range so we don't know if it will support 802.11n.

The Viewpad 10Pro is a 10-inch tablet with a 1024x600 LED backlit capacitive multi-touch panel. It boots either Windows 7 Professional on Android 2.2, so Viewsonic has missed out on Google's 'Gingerbread' and tablet optimised 'Honeycomb' versions of Android.

Like a lot of other new tablets coming out now, it will have an Intel 'Oak Trail' Atom CPU and Flash 10.1 support. No word on storage or the amount of RAM but you'll get 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth and a claimed six-hour battery life. µ

Dual Sim is great, can't wait to buy one

I love dual Sim phones as it saves me time and hassle carrying two phones. But upto now biggest problem has been no smartphone available with dual sim standby and 3G connectivity. The chinese dual sim ones do not even support WAP, so any new Android phone with 3G and dual sim is a killer. Viewsonic is simply brilliant.

Android on Atom - a first?

Is the phone booting Android 2.2 on its Oak Trail Atom..? or is it a dual CPU device with an ARM to run Android and Atom to do the Windows side of things?
