A SURVEY by Accenture has told us what we all knew already, people get fed up with electronics devices that crash, freeze, or just plain don't work.
The firm polled US and UK gadget users and found that over half of them are frustrated by technology does not work. Perhaps even more surprisingly, these consumers would prefer to pay for technology that actually does what it is supposed to do.
This means that cool gadgets might be about to become a thing of the past as people have had enough for paying for style over substance and form over functionality, according to Accenture, and are prepared to go boring and reliable instead.
"As consumers accumulate and rely on more devices to help manage their lives, they are becoming increasingly frustrated with devices that frequently crash or don't work as well as expected," said Jean-Laurent Poitou, global managing director of Accenture Embedded Software.
"The 'cool factor' is no longer enough. Consumers, especially younger ones, seek simpler, more intelligent devices with just the right number of useful functionalities."
Over half of those surveyed said that they had been frustrated with at least one of their frequently used devices. Crashes were cited by 39 per cent of respondents as most annoying. Roughly half as many felt that their device was not doing enough to protect their data and privacy, although this rose to 49 per cent amongst the 18-24 year olds.
This frustration is directed at even the most basic areas of technology, and over half of those polled said that they would like a chance to say something to their device designer, which in this case was 'Keep its simple'. Fully 43 per cent said that they would prefer it if developers concentrated on getting a few features right, as opposed to their current 'kitchen sink' approach to feature provisioning.
Half of all respondents said that they would be prepared to pay more to get better devices that work well and perform tasks automatically and autonomously. µ
