AMD executive cull continues as COO and strategy SVP exit

Seifert slays more
Thu Feb 10 2011, 11:35

CHIP DESIGNER AMD's COO Bob Rivet and corporate strategy SVP Marty Seyer have both quit, just weeks after CEO Dirk Meyer departed.

Meyer got the boot because things just weren't going well and the board felt that he wasn't the right man to do the job of producing growth. AMD has yet to return our phone call to confirm the latest departures.

The exit of Rivet and Seyer suggests that, (a), there wasn't much confidence in the guy leading the strategy, if there was one, and (b), Rivet wasn't a viable candidate for the CEO slot. Not getting the CEO job after it's vacated is probably enough to make any COO to want to walk out the door.

The person overseeing the night, or weeks, of the long knives is interim CEO and CFO Thomas Seifert. He told the fourth quarter investors' telecon back in January that the discussion around Meyer's leaving was "more than a tablet strategy, the mobility discussion was also an infrastructure question... and addressing some of the near term opportunities to improve profitability."

Media reports at the time speculated that Meyer had been pushed out because he had not developed a strategy for AMD to make the most of the tablet craze and smartphone growth, but Seifert denied that.

Whoever takes over is not going to have an easy time of it. Seifert and his board of directors admitted that revenue for the first quarter of 2011 will likely be "flattish" and that sales of GPUs in the fourth quarter in 2010 were down, along with a lack of overall revenue growth. µ

An Apple moment ?

I still remember when Apple's board booted Steve Jobs in '85. That began their downward slide being run by bureaucrats until Jobs' return in '97. The rest is history. We'll have to wait to see what happens to AMD

PR stunts at AMD

AMD finally have the APU out. It is easyly killing any atom combination possible. BUT ! Take a look of this nice feat:

http://sites.amd.com/us/fusion/apu/pages/fusion.aspx?lid=HP|Premier|Hero

That's pretty much all that they have to say about it... if NVidia pulled out something like this, or even the blue contender, they would bravade and hold a great show. So everybody knows there's a new product on the block. ;)
But, apparently, it really doesn't matter the performance of the products AMD is producing, or the price, or everything. People are just happy AMD exists for the simple reason this is getting Intel products a little bit cheaper. Now, atom will get really cheaper, right ?
So, AMD, please, pretty please... just go belly up... Intel fans will suddenly get a 'little bit' more out of cash. And they will be really happy. After all, it's an Intel, no matter the price.
You'll see, apu, bulldozer... it doesn't matter... AMD is simply a buffer invented by IBM a very long time ago when it required at least two providers of chips in order to put that kind of chips into it's products. It remained and apparently will remain a buffer for as long as Intel will exist. The big and bullying briber is the king. The small and righteous is always going to strugle to survive. That's the story.

May be they should hire..

Carly Fiorina.. Yeah, now that she failed HP and the US senate campaign, should could kill the rest of AMD..

The sad truth is there are no good candidates for CEOs who understand the dynamics of the processor industry.. Their only hope is to hire somebody from Intel or sell out to some other company but who wants this kind of cut throat business.. Even IBM and Apple do not dare to think about it.. They did exit the business a while ago..

AMD needs a major heart and brain transplant!

Crappy processors, my ass

I feel like we're looking at 2 different companies. Mr. Meyer was doing great. They kicked him out because the shareholders are a bunch of greedy bastards that aren't willing to look more than a year or two into the future when they make their plans.

Kicking out Dirk Meyers was a huge mistake, let's just hope they don't suffer TOO badly for it.

About time

I agree with John Kane.

It's time for AMD to get tid of the garbage and get people who really care about the company and its future.

Crappy management = crappy processors, slipped roadmaps and many more excuses as of late

AMDs main problem....

The main problem with AMD has always....I repeat always...been with it's management. They have been lucky so long only due to their many brilliant engineers.

I think AMD should take this opportunity and "clean away" most of the top management and get new blood from outside.

Excellent work, bye!

I do hope AMD will stop shooting itself in the foot, soon.
