IPAD AND ANDROID 2.2 handset owners will be able to download a BBC Iplayer app by Friday.
To watch Eastenders or Match Of The Day, or even listen to a radio programme, you will need a WiFi connection. For telly the BBC tells The INQUIRER that Android phones will be able to show the highest quality picture Iplayer can provide. But they will have to have Adobe Flash 10.1 installed.
This highest picture quality claim seems a bit much, as Iplayer can provide HD 720p but we're not aware of any HD capable handset displays.
Aunty Beeb was going to announce the Iplayer on Friday but some careless tweeting let the cat out of the bag, and so the monolithic broadcaster put up a blog post yesterday to head off wild speculation. Some media reports are saying tomorrow is the big day, while others are saying sometime soon.
The BBC told The INQUIRER, "I won't say because if we don't [release it this week] then we look like idiots." Well yes, but when has that stopped anyone in the IT sector from announcing anything?
The BBC announced Iplayer for the Ipad last year. That saw the BBC's Bigscreen website modified for use with the Ipad but it wasn't an app.
Touchscreen enabled the Ipad and Android Iplayer apps will allow users to watch live TV and listen to radio, access the seven-day catch-up TV and radio catalogue and create their own personalised favourites. The BBC also expects to build in more features throughout the year. µ
Interesting to compare the comments on the iPad version of the iPlayer vs. The Android one. Android seems almost exclusively negative; iPad the exact opposite. No issues with sound disappearing when turned off or another app running on that platform. Perhaps more work for the Android version is needed.
...people feel they shouldn't pay the license fee.
I've just seen it on the market - got bad comments all over it. No 3G broadcasting when you can just go on the internet and watch in browser, and all sound goes when the screen is turned off - great for radio...
when will these fools just privatise the beeb. it's politically biased anyway, that argument is long gone. I dont want to pay for shoddy apps, shoddy shows and massive salaries for these goons like chris moyles and jeremy clarkson.
Great news.
Finally I can view BBC material on my Android without going through dodgy web browsers or awful Apps.
Can't wait for it! :)
These high-quality, free apps are not officially blessed and have therefore been taken down at the request of the BBC, so that they can provide worse service at our expense :-(
I've had beebplay on my HTC desire for months.
Why is this being covered when there has been an app when an existing app has been around for ages and works on 3G (Vodafone and 3 anyway)?
On my iPhone / iPad / iWhatever I can already use BBC iplayer perfectly well just by going to it's website. What exactly is the difference with this app?
Where do these reporters research their facts? You can't get Match of the Day on iPlayer due to licencing restrictions. Just shoddy reporting really...
