RIM might have to walk away from corporate India
CANADIAN MAKER of the Blackberry gadget might be forced out of corporate India thanks to the government's obsession with being able to spy on everyone.
Research in Motion (RIM) told Reuters that there was no possibility of meeting Indian government demands for access to corporate emails on Blackberry devices and so it is likely that the outfit will get banned.
India has demanded access to all Blackberry services, claiming that it needs to fight militancy and security threats over the Internet.
However RIM VP Robert Crow told reporters there is no possibility of it providing any kind of a solution because it did not have any keys to be handed over.
RIM has been bending over backwards to the nutty demands of various different countries lately that have insisted that the company bow down to their 20th century interpretations of 7th century morals.
Earlier this month, RIM said it will filter pornographic Internet content for Blackberry users in Indonesia. Last year, it was nearly banned by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, but no one said what RIM did to meet UAE telecom regulations.
The problem is that RIM encrypts email messages as they travel between a Blackberry device and a Blackberry Enterprise Server.
RIM said that it does not have a master key to decode corporate emails, adding that each organisation has the technical capability to grant access to its own encrypted enterprise email.
So far RIM has been trying to let the Indian spooks in as much as possible. Earlier this month it gave India access to its Messenger service.
But it looks like RIM has gone as far as it can to satisfy the Indian government without doing the impossible.
Crow pointed out that "BlackBerry represents a very small fraction of the total population of VPNs in India."
"There may be more than a million VPNs in India with high security architecture," he added. µ

RIM is not stuppid. Those clowns should thank RIM that it didnt slap them, those clowns should take this RIM "leak" as face saving.
Why are they picking on RIM only, Microsoft Exchange provides the same self encryption capabilities as BES, so why just RIM, why not Microsoft too?

Only states that they are working on a law to allow it, it doesn't say anywhere that Rim have agreed to comply.
You need to read past the bold bit first rather than just knee jerk linking.

RIM should get out from India and the writer of this article should have commonsense to comment on India. Why any country should satisfy on their security? If the author of this article doesnt bother about privacy and security; publish your all email and bank account user names and passwords.
