Android is the best bet for games developers

Fragmented means it's everywhere
Thu Jan 27 2011, 16:51

STEVE JOBS might come to regret his comments about open source not being open but being fragmented, because apps developers see that freedom as key to long term apps market viability.

Android is expected to be everywhere - on tablets, on in-car entertainment systems, on Internet connected tellies and set-top boxes, and even on aircraft in-flight entertainment systems, as well as on smartphones.

Christopher Kassulke, Handygames CEO told the 8th annual Mobile Games Forum (MGF) held in London today that because of Android's expected ubiquity throughout computing devices in society, it is a much better bet for apps developers to make a profit. As such, he said, Android devices will get a much wider range of apps.

The Android and Iphone developer panelists agreed that very few apps are actually successful, and Herocraft's UK development manager, Matt Meads said that the holy grail is to get a top five app on Apple's app store. Achieving that, however, was deemed extremely difficult. Android offers a much better return on investment.

Asked by the audience if Apple and Google give developers enough guidance, Scoreloops' CEO Marc Gumpinger described Apple's app store as someone's sweet shop, referring to Steve Jobs and his level of control over apps development.

And it would seem that Microsoft will also go the Apple route. Its third party publishing manager for EMEA, Rob Simister told MGF, "we wouldn't want adult entertainment on our phone."

Ignoring one of the biggest online revenue streams is further proof that Ballmer's boys don't have a strategy for winning. µ

Linux isn't "the" gaming platform (as well as Macs) because M$ provided "incentives" to video-board manufacturers in such a way to privilege its proprietary DirectX framework instead of open solutions like the unbeatable OpenGL.

If I'm to follow your theory, I'd say that WP7 would be the platform of choice for game developers.

Taking away the DirectX factor, there's nothing in the way of Linux and its derivates to become the next de-facto standard gaming platform.

Also, I'm yet to hear about one single game developer who likes to work inside a "locked down tight" environment. That sounds pretty stupid by the way.

FYI, people like freedom. Oh except Apple fanbois, that's it.

Yeah this is why linux is THE gaming platform too... oh wait.

It's about money, and apple is a better bet for game companies because it's locked down tight.

open source is on a march

Apple have plainly not learnt from Microsoft's "lock it down" approach. It's like a target for hackers. Hackers hack for the sake of circumnavigation, to annoy companies and prove they have an ability equal to their programmers. Look at MS Kinect and jailbreaking of Apple products. Even Android handset manufacturers that have updates distributed when they want are being mocked by the process of rooting.

Look at the spread of open source compared to closed OSs. People forget, Chrome-OS and Android are variants of Linux. Just because we don't call it Linux, doesn't make it any less true.

The future holds goods that we don't have to pay for. Energy production will be the first forefront, followed by transportation.

@ Sundar

Though that might be true for some...

its obvious that android is headed to becoming the dominant mobile OS in the world, and developers WILL have the oportunity for larger volumes of sales.

Cant wait

I can't wait when the androids recent openGL implementment gets fully used by the developpers.

After that I have a feeling it will sort itself out, and it will become very clear where the best games are to be found :)

Depends

If you want to develop "Casino Crime" or "Gears of War"... Android development is a real pain compared to the iPhone
