SEARCH ENGINE GOOGLE is offering to port your phone number to its Google Voice service.
Google Voice is a free service that routes telephone calls to any phone you designate and gives you voicemail and text messaging.
Now it seems that Google will charge you $20 to port all your Google calls to a regular telephone number.
Once you get the hang of it, you give out your Google number and the search engine will find you. It effectively will make your phone number permanent. So people like me have no reason not to remember it.
There are a few problems in the system. Some people who want things connected to their mobile phone might have to change their contacts. There also might be those who are a little worried about giving Google total control over their phone calls.
Then there are those who use Skype. But you have to admire the technology involved. µ
I don't consider myself hard of understanding, but this article totally confuses me too. You really should have a linky. I thought google voice wasn't available in the UK?
I'm a big INQ fan and have visited every day for years, but you guys need to raise the journo standard as it has slipped a LOT of late ;)
Your article is a bit confusing. I know what it means to port a number. One of your paragraphs is confusing.

.....
This is not true, or at least not accurate. You are not going to be charged $20 to port all your Google calls to a regular telephone number.
You will be charged a one time fee of $20.00 to take your existing *mobile* phone number and port it over to Google Voice's service.
Only your mobile phone number qualifies.
When you create a Google Voice account or your choose to change your Google Voice number, you can choose to port from your cell provider your mobile number for use with Google Voice.
