MOBILE ALSO-RAN Microsoft has blamed a problem with its Windows Phone 7 (WP7) devices on an un-named third party.
For a while people have been moaning that Windows Phone 7 handsets have been uploading shedloads of data for no reason. The problem seems to affect 3G users and has caused lots of them to go over their monthly bandwidth limits.
Microsoft has apparently nailed the problem down. However it insists that it is not responsible. The Vole claims that the problem is the fault of some mysterious third party software application.
It is not saying who created the application, so users cannot send it their phone bills.
Microsoft's statement to the Seattle PI was that the third party application commonly accessed from phones running WP7 is configured so that it potentially causes larger than expected data uploads.
"We are in contact with the third party to assist them in making the necessary fixes, and are also pursuing potential workarounds to address the configuration issue in case those are needed. At this point in our investigation, we believe this is responsible for most of the reported incidents," a Microsoft spokesman said.
The Vole also insists that only a small percentage of Windows Phone 7 customers have reported being affected. µ
The sweepstakes for which thirds party app it is begins. Which WP7 app provider is going scuttle out an update?
That being said, as this is a Microsoft product I'm sure there's someone out there with a definitive on this. Here's hoping those in the know feel the need to share.
Ah well, I guess I'll be waiting in vain for Nick "Microsoft Bob" Farrell to contribute a lucid thought on this. A pity as he does such a wonderful job with prose when there's even the remotest possibility of a Linux (or even better an Apple!) faux pas.
Well, of course only a small percentage reported it! The bloody majority can't send any reports as they are already over their data caps!
If they did then they would have much better products.
MS execs have tech support, they should try using their products without tech support, this would show up the lies of the product managers and just how poor some aspects of their products are.
A history of poor products is damaging MS's credibility.
