Opera sings its way onto Sony TVs

Bravia and Blu-ray players
Wed Jan 19 2011, 10:46

TELEVISION MAKER SONY has announced that it will put the Opera browser on Sony Bravia televisions and Blu-ray players

The idea is to bring more interactive components to connected home users by offering Opera's browser on Sony gear.

The Opera devices software developer kit (SDK) is the cross-platform, standards-based backbone of Opera for connected TVs and Blu-ray Disc players and enables creating web standards based products.

Opera will allow web applications, widgets, full web browsing and emerging standards such as HTML5, HbbTV and OIPF to be run on televisions.

Christen Krogh, chief development officer at Opera Software said that the web is evolving and Opera wanted to make it more accessible across diverse devices. He claims Opera's technology is a natural fit with Sony gear that is becoming more connected.

While Opera has not made much of an impact on the general Internet market it has done rather well in the mobile arena. Moving onto televisions and other Internet connected home entertainment devices might be a good niche for it. µ

Don't care about Sony Products

Sony is a company that we used to support exclusively. We have installed millions of dollars worth of their equipment. Now that Sony is becoming a company that sues their customers when they open or modify Sony products we have decided to take a pass on all Sony products going forward. We can no longer recommend their products to our customers and are now actively recommending against Sony Products. A company that lobbies against consumer rights, Calls their customers criminals, Infect and damage their customers PCs with rootkits, and the list goes on cannot be trusted in good faith.
