TEALEAF READER and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said the Xbox isn't a games console and, with Kinect, will be part of everyone's future.
Ballmer spent most of a recent interview with USA Today toeing the company line with on-message Kinect and Xbox talk. Most impressive was that Ballmer managed to bash a square peg into a round hole by responding to non Xbox based questions with Xbox related answers. Maybe Ballmer just wanted to promote something after spending an hour during his CES 2011 keynote speech saying nothing at all.
He was keen to insist that the Xbox will be a ubiquitous plaything in living rooms for some time to come.
"Xbox isn't a gaming console. Xbox is a family entertainment center. It's a place to socialize. It's a place to watch TV," he said.
But in the world according to Ballmer, Xbox has already hit the male teen demographic and it will be Kinect that girls will rave about.
"You go to your average 15-year-old boy, and he will say 'I'll take an Xbox.' I want that average 15-year-old girl as excited about the Kinect, and we haven't done as good a job drawing in that broader set of demographics," Ballmer added.
That answer came in reply to a question about how well the Vole measures up against Apple and Google for cool factor. Go figure.
If Kinect is the future of consumer electronics interaction, there might be some truth in the rumours that Microsoft will put gesture control in Windows. Over at Winrumours, there is talk that Windows will get a Kinect SDK and drivers support. Rumour has it that a Kinect SDK and drivers will be out within a few months and will allow third-party developers to create gesture-based titles for PC games. µ
Good one MS, American boys in there teens are the exact demographic that should be banned from using the xbox, or at least xbox live. Maybe the introduction of girls will help dilute the plethora of screaming idiots that inhabit 'live. Except they won't use it if they're all using this kinect thingamyjig, they'd have to use a wireless hardset, so unless they're going to lash it to their ear-rings, they'll be flying all over the place and destroying the barbie display.
First it was leaked that MS watches you remotely over that kinect cam, and now balmer wants girls to use it more ;)
Hmmm not in the UK.
Where is my iPlayer? Where is my Love Film/Netflix setup? Where is my ability to get into the web? Etc.Etc.
Get some of that and we might be part way there.
What is slightly worrying is that he mentions 15 year old boys at all, doesn't he know the average age of a gamer is 33
