Firefox overtakes IE in Europe

Browser war in Europe is over
Wed Jan 05 2011, 08:57

OPEN SOURCE WEB BROWSER Firefox has overtaken Microsoft's Internet Explorer as Europe's browser of choice.

According to figures from web analytics firm Statcounter, this is the first time that IE has lost its top spot in a major market.

In December Firefox took 38.1 per cent of the European market, while Internet Explorer's share slipped to 37.5 per cent. Google's Chrome saw its share rising to 14.6 per cent from just 5.1 per cent a year earlier.

Aodhan Cullen, Statcounter CEO said the Chrome factor is what is killing IE.

While Firebadger is keeping its market share, Internet Exploder is losing ground to Chrome. It seems that the great unwashed still like their browsers being made by a huge corporation but they don't like IE.

Reuters thinks part of the problem for the Vole might be the March 2009 agreement between the European Commission and Microsoft to allow European Union users a choice of browsers.

Last December, Microsoft offered Europeans the option to choose from among 12 browsers on more than 100 million old and new PCs that use its Windows operating system.

However the Vole also had problems with malware last year, leading to the German government and the EU recommending that nation states abandon IE in favour of Firefox. µ

Firefox is just over 6 years old now. Or 8 years if you count the time when it changed its name frequently. Or 10 years including the Mozilla Suite from which it emerged. Or if you want to REALLY go back all the way it's now 16 years after Mosaic, but that's really far-fetched.

Looking back though, Firefox only really took off when Version 1.0 came out in 2004. Mozilla reintroduced the world to the concept of installing an alternative webbrowser. They gained market share when IE held over 98% of it (the rest being some Mac and Linux users). It was a painstaking, slow process to get people out of their comfy pre-installed Microsoft world.
Ultimately, without Firefox, there would be no Chrome or any other browser that is mildly relevant.
Well, at least Opera would still be there, since there always seem to be just enough people mental enough to use it.

But you're right. Browser wars are hardly over. Mozilla is right on track with Firefox 4 and it's looking good. Microsoft will somehow release IE9, which is also surprisingly good, given how bad 8 was. Google will keep releasing their Chromes so fast they'll be at version 37 by the end of the year. And Opera will keep doing things completely different from everyone else and still not gain market share no matter how many times they sue Microsoft.

Unlikely

I doubt that browser wars will ever be over, since having even a partial share is still a demonstration of relevance, and the shifting sands of R&D will ensure that none of the combatants can afford complacency.

!?

So after years, decades almost, Firefox passes IE by 0,6% and the "Browser war in Europe is over" !?!?!?

What's the logic in that???

oh never mind... i forgot, there is no logic in the inquirer :-D

Good!

Thats good, even if it is less than 1%.
It was inevitable that firefox would eventually overtake IE in market share.
It was just a matter when.
