HP gives Apple fanbois something to Envy

Mac clone dirt cheap
Wed Dec 29 2010, 12:56

THE MAKER OF EXPENSIVE PRINTER INK, HP has slashed the price of its Macbook Air rival, the Envy 13-inch model.

HP is now selling the Envy 13 for just $999 with a $450 instant rebate. The machine has an Intel 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo Processor, 3GB of memory, an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 graphics chip with 512MB of dedicated memory, Beats audio, a 250GB hard disk drive, an external Supermulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW optical drive with double layer support and is preloaded with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

The HP laptop was pitched at falling between Apple's 13-inch Macbook Pro and the Macbook Air. It is also guaranteed to have no elves on board.

Like the Macbook Air and the Macbook Pro it has an aluminium chassis and is thin and light weight. At the time it was released, which was more than a year ago, it was called a Macbook Air ripoff. It even had something that looked a lot like Apple's multi-touch pad.

Reviewers said at the time that it did a few things better than the Apple Macbook Pro. It had a nicer screen, better graphics performance and a smaller build.

Now we guess it is just a little too long in the tooth, but for under $999 we reckon some bargain hunters might think it is a pretty good buy. µ

Envy?

A clone running Windows 7? I'll keep my Mac Pro. Got it from the Apple Outlet store with better specs for less money, Mac OS<<, Ubuntu, and for a few € more an XP Virtual machine... For an IT guy, it's a must.

There's a better alternative

On Amazon, for $300 less than the Envy you can still grab an Alienware m11x, with a Core 2 Duo SU7300 processor overclocked to 1.73GHz, 4GB ram, and both a discrete 1GB NVIDIA GT335M graphic card as well as an integrated Intel HD GMA4500 card, which are hot switchable.

The little Alienware is not only cheaper, but able to play any game made up to the present, and play them well, something neither the Mac nor the HP can do, and it has up to a 7 hour battery life when using the Intel card, bringing this gaming powerhouse well into netbook battery performance territory. With a 2 1/2 hour battery life on the NVIDIA GT335M card surpasses just about every high end gaming laptop as well.

3 USB 2.0 ports, VGA out, HDMI, WiFi, Ethernet, Display Port, Multicard reader, SIM card slot, Firewire, LED lit screen, 2 headphone jacks as well as a mic jack, built in webcam, and all the Alienware features like backlit keyboard, etc, make this a machine in a class all it's own.

the inquirer= poor and bias reporting

the inquirer= poor and bias reporting. because even when proven wrong and stupid you still maintain that they where right. Hope you learn how to report the tech news professionally. Or just come out and say that you are pro Microsoft website and you only do opinion pieces and real have no news value.

...Except

That it doesn't run Mac OSX - the real reason people pay the price for apple hardware.

But it still has bloatware on it

If it was 100% Ubuntu compatible from the 10.10 install disk it may be worth looking at.

Windows = Fail

"Envy"? Not with Windows.

So, for only $200 less

you can have a 1.6GHz rather than a 2.4GHz Core 2 CPU, 3GB rather than 4GB of RAM, no Firewire port or SD slot, no optical audio out and no web cam. I can see how Apple purchasers would envy that (NOT!)
