COME FROM BEHIND smartphone OS flogger Microsoft has let slip that in the six weeks following its release, Windows Phone 7 (WP7) has racked up 1.5 million handset shipments.
That is not earth-shaking, but at least it's nowhere nearly as bad as the reception received by the Vole's Kin phones.
Microsoft has reportedly confirmed that the figure merely tallies the numbers that phone manufacturers have shipped to retailers and does not reflect how many WP7 phones have actually been sold to consumers.
Achim Berg, the Vole's VP of business and marketing for Windows phones, chirped that early customer survey data about the phones is positive and the willingness to recommend them is very high.
Microsoft has more than 4,000 apps in its marketplace, he indicated, and "more pouring in daily". Making the best of it, he claimed that this is an "enviable pace" for any new device.
"We know we have tough competition, and this is a completely new product. We're in the race - it's not a sprint but we are certainly gaining momentum and we're in it for the long run," he said.
He said that the 1.5 million figure was what Micorosft had realistically expected for the new platform.
"Measuring for success is more long term than short term. We launched with many of the top mobile operators in the world, and even more in the coming year in 2011. We have 18,000 developers who are developing for our marketplace. It's just getting better and better," Berg said.
He said the figures are about right for a first generation mobile platform and that Microsoft is in a "good place".
He also said that the Vole is on course to release the first of several updates in the next couple of months, and that several more mobile operators around the world will introduce Windows Phone 7 on their networks in 2011. µ
So they spent $500 million on ads and they don't have actual sales figures or activation rates of phones? And since they're reluctant to release this info, developers aren't excited to work on this platform, And there's no excitement for this phone, I'd have to agree it's looking like a massive fail.
<<he
But this isn't a first generation mobile platform. There was Windows Mobile 5, 6, and 6.5.
Journalists forget that AT&T previously announced it would buy 8 million Windows Phones.
What happened to that order? Did AT&T downgrade the order? Are there 6.5 million unwanted Windows Phones in warehouses that can't be sold?
In June, Ballmer boasted that he would sell 30 million Windows Phones. Now they only moved 1.5 million, and that number is only the number sitting in a warehouse. Microsoft won't tell us how many it actually sold to consumers.
We can therefore see that Windows Phone 7 has become a tremendous flop.
Considering the track record that they had going into Windows Phone 7, 250k phones per week is a good start for any new OS (a minimum of 230k/week if you take into consideration any stock by phone comapies)...also considering the fact that phone companies have not been stockpiling anything in large quantities for some time now any of those comments are usually from them with their head still stuck in the sand.
Personally I enjoy the phone. Quickest OS that I have had a chance to use yet.
Quote from other site this AM "MS withdraws misfiring Outlook update"
It's so easy to trash M$. They write the stuff for us trolls.
Does this site have any journalistic integrity? I am so amazed at the constant bashing of Microsoft that people will start taking this site as a serious joke. SIMPLY AMAZING
Follow the troll, he obviously is wise.
p.s Paragraph 2 states that it is not actual sales.
What they did say was that 1.5 million phones have been shipped to retailers (which MS count as a sale as they've been paid their licence fee).. They could be all sat on shelves gathering dust for all we know. It's also not an impressive number given the range of handsets and number of territories they're in.
