THREE DIMENSIONAL telly sales are not going to save Sony's flagging LCD television revenues, according to one of its executive deputy presidents.
Sony EDP Hiroshi Yoshioka told Reuters that the electronics company will find it tough to make profits on its TV business this year and isn't expecting much from the next financial year.
The Japanese company has, according to Reuters, been losing money on its televisions for the past six years and 3D and Internet capable sets had been the company's great hopes. Instead of 25 million Sony LCD tellies being sold by March next year, the new eye boggling technology has provided no great sales boost and has just been seen as a white elephant.
A digital switchover in Japan combined with government support helped Sony, but domestic sales alone could not close that revenue gap. Yoshioka explained that a problem with selling 3D tellies was that customers thought that the sets could not show 2D images. That combined with the lack of 3D content has deterred sales.
This seems to have been less of a problem in the UK where 3D TV sales have allegedly done better than High Definition did in its first year. One wonders if the royal wedding next year could see Sky attempt a 3D TV exclusive that could bolster sales further. µ
Sony screw you and make you feel screwed. That's their problem.
Sony used to mean excellent Japanese tech, but that was 30 years ago. Some of their products are very good, but that's only some.
The memory cards are a blatant rip off. And that stays in people's minds. Whenever I think of Sony I automatically get a slightly angry or defensive feeling, lol, and I think it's down to them ripping off people I know. I feel like kicking some of the Sony's board of directors very hard in the ass bone!
Looks to me like Sony is kicking it's own ass bone very well!
If Sony want to increase market share then I think they need to increase the amount of propietary shit like memory cards. Maybe they should make Sony-HDMI cables for £200 each? If they could sell one of those with each TV then they could make a profit!
This is because Sony still charges a premium for their brand name, which they used to get away with because of superior quality, but Samsung and LG to name 2 have equaled their quality and are significantly cheaper
I know that because of their DRM and rootkits, Sony isn't getting a dime from me for a good long time. Perhaps other people feeling the same way toward Sony is affecting their bottom line.
3D TV (and cinema) in its current implementation is only a novelty. I, for one, am not interested in wearing glasses to look at a darker picture that strain my eyes. After suffering through Avatar, I now avoid going to movies that are only available in 3D.
As for Sony (and LCD partner Samsung), they made a strategic mistake when they built a plant to produce 40 inch LCD panels. Why buy a 40 inch TV when it sells for the same price as a 42 inch one?
What I want next is 4xHD. For this to work, I need content delivered at <=1GB/s through a pipe to my home. This isn't going to happen in the US as the "providers" are too busy squeezing blood from a stone.
3d doesn't interest me, at all. The investment in 3d was "easy" and "cheap", and yielded little. If Sony had decided to build a mega backbone in the US, they might have been able to sell more hardware and content. But this would have been "expensive" and "hard". And the piracy issue worries them. So, because they don't have the balls to be successful, they should give up and go out of businesss. It is their choosen path.
What? People don't know that 3D TV can show 2D image? that's one of the lamest excuses I ever heard! To buy a 3D TV you are supposed to at least see it in a shop, ask some information to the TV section guy... You don't shell out that kind of money without a minimum research.
I believe lack of content is a real issue, as you are restricted to Blu-ray content, but the real let down in 3D is the glasses. They are expensive, and you need one for each person.Got a family with 4 people? Thats at least 4 glasses, if you don't buy more, you can't show your shiny new telly to your guests. Lots of people don't like the shutter thing either, as it reduces brightness and makes some people dizzy.
Polarized glasses would be much cheaper, but the TV would need twice the number of pixels.
