FREE SOFTWARE VISIONARY Richard Stallman has slammed Google's Chrome OS, dubbing it "careless computing".
Stallman, who is the original author of the GNU software ecosystem and the founder of the Free Software Foundation, apparently does not like the idea of cloud computing.
He told the Guardian that while he likes the fact that Chrome OS is loosely based on GNU/Linux, the operating system has been gutted of the usual software tools and rigged up to impede and discourage installing applications.
Google thinks that a netbook that can't install external applications will be inherently more secure than one that can install malware, and that a system without a lot of preinstalled applications will boot much faster.
But Stallman is particularly concerned about the user's loss of control of their data within the Google dream.
He told the Guardian that a government official could nick your data without having to actually show a warrant at your front door.
Stallman thinks that marketers like "cloud computing" because it is devoid of substantive meaning. What it means in reality is letting any "Tom, Dick and Harry hold your data, let any Tom, Dick and Harry do your computing for you (and control it)", in other words careless computing. µ
Thats what capitalism is about Mr. Stallman you need suckers.
Those who deal with him a lot (especially via mailing lists) have got a shorthand for much of his email, since its often the same.
#1 - "it's not Linux, it's GNU/Linux"
#2 - "Don't call it Intellectual Property"
#3 - This is why we need change
#4 - Cloud bad, mmkay!
This is just a typical example of #4. I know one guy that purposefully writes emails he knows RMS will read, just to get a #1 or #2 from him...
In media circles people, organisations and ideas can slammed and blasted. Meaningless media words much like management speak with no actual definition and factual account of how it was said or the vitrol behind it. The guy has a point though, stop trusting large companies with your data unless you have no respect for your own privacy.
Well people are misguided enough to buy the new macbooks, I don't see why they wouldn't spend all their money on Google netbooks. All they have to do is market it to the pretentious hipster market and sales will soar.
Did Stallman actually "blast" Google Chrome. The term implies an individual foaming at the mouth while screaming at the top of his lungs.
He made points many others have also been making for the last year.
I think there will be a segment of the population where Chrome will be a good fit. Similar examples are users of the iPhone (apps that constantly access the web, GPS, etc) and Facebook (those practically living within their friend network).
Thanks for the hysterical title, though! It made for a good laugh. I mean... this is me laughing at you.LOL
