ANDROID USERS are the most data hungry with Iphone owners a close second, according to a study by network management software company Arieso.
Android-powered smartphone users scored highest in both uplink and downlink data volumes. Users of the Samsung Galaxy were found to upload 126 per cent more data than Iphone 3G users, while HTC Desire owners downloaded 41 per cent more data.
However Iphone 4 owners were more data hungry than Iphone 3G users with 41 per cent more data being downloaded to the IOS4 handset and its users spending 67 per cent more time connected to the network.
Arieso states that, "voice calls per [smartphone] subscriber remain roughly flat, suggesting that the new breed of smartphone subscribers use their devices first and foremost for data consumption rather than making phone calls."
The study reaffirms Google's strategy of giving away its Android OS to encourage handset OEMs to use it so their customers then search the web and use mobile Internet enabled services provided by Google. µ
* Google Maps with turn by turn navigation "just works" and costs nothing (but needs a datalink to download all the navigation data in real time.) My wife's paid-for iPhone satnav software looks poor in comparison.
Pay no attention to that idiot on the Gadget Show shouting "Claridges" at his Desire. I am in France and just said "London Hotel Claridges" to mine and it found it straight-away.
* You are not tied to the computer with your installation of iTunes. If there is something you need to download and you have a Wifi or "Unlimited" Broadband connection, just download it.
* Google Listen "Just works". I listen to podcasts from the BBC, Floss Weekly etc when I'm cooking, driving, walking the dog etc. Google listen is polite enough to check that you really want to use the 3G network to download these things but if you are happy to do so it is happy to do so also
I haven't really explored the possibilities of downloading music to the phone - I still haven't had time to listen to the few CDs I ripped to it. I suspect however that if you want a music player that doubles as a phone and digital assistant then the iPhone might be your best choice.
I, however, have absolutely no regrets about choosing a Droid phone.
