Google shows off Android 3.0 on a Motorola tablet

The next Android OS on an unreleased device

NOT CONTENT with launching the Nexus S smartphone, Google's Android chief Andy Rubin has shown off Motorola's upcoming tablet running Android 3.0.

Last week, the soon to be president of Motorola Mobility, Daniel Moloney, revealed the outfit's plans to release tablets in 2011. Although Moloney was cagey on details, Rubin was more than happy to spill the beans on Motorola's upcoming device.

Rubin was speaking at the D:Dive Into Mobile event when he brought out a nameless Motorola device running the Android 3.0 OS known as Honeycomb. The operating system was just one of the surprises in store, with Rubin revealing that the device will have a dual-core Tegra chip from Nvidia and support video conferencing.

From what little can be seen of Android 3.0, Google has reworked some of the user interface including the home and lock screens. Rubin also demonstrated an updated version of Google Maps, which looks very slick.

Android 3.0 is designed to make better use of tablet devices, with both Motorola and Acer having said that they will wait until Google releases the next major release of Android before putting out tablets.

Motorola, which will split into two separate firms early next year, has said that it will be releasing 7-inch and 10-inch tablets in 2011. Judging by Rubin's presentation, the mobile phone firm isn't far off the mark, and now it's up to Google to put the finishing touches on Android 3.0.

Rubin did not reveal when the device he was demonstrating will hit the shelves, though we expect Motorola to promote its new tablets at CES in January. µ
