POPULAR LINUX VENDOR Canonical has unveiled the first alpha version of Ubuntu 11.04, dubbed Natty Narwhal Alpha 1.

The release is for developers only and is not designed for regular users. The next major upgrade of the operating system is due for release in April, 2011, which explains the release number. That version is supposed to replace the Gnome Shell with Unity in the desktop environment.

Kate Stewart, Ubuntu release manager at Canonical, said in a blog post that the pre-releases of Ubuntu 11.04 are not encouraged for anyone needing a stable system or who is not comfortable running into occasional, even frequent breakage.

Natty Narwhal includes Openoffice as its office suite. Canonical voiced its support for Libre Office but that decision does not seem to have filtered down to this version of the OS.

The alpha version also features Firefox 4 beta 7, and the Unity desktop environment is enabled by default.

Stewart said that at this point in development Ubuntu is planning to stay with Gnome2. This is because Unity is under heavy development and they expect problems.

"In the future we may eventually move away from Gnome2 but substantial discussions and testing will be required," she said.

Ubuntu Desktop will run Unity by default and the Ubuntu Classic Session will run gnome-panel. Ubuntu Classic supports all video hardware and video drivers. Ubuntu Desktop requires 3D driver support.

Alpha 1 uses the Linux 2.6.37-rc3 kernel, a major update from the 2.6.35 kernel used in the current Ubuntu 10.10 release, Maverick Meercat. As Ubuntu 11.04 comes closer to release the Linux kernel is expected to roll forward to version 2.6.38. µ

Ubuntu is the one for me

When I first starting using Linux years ago I had to go back to MS for some reason but that is no longer the case. In my opinion Linux has surpassed MS in every way I can think of. While there are some good apps for Windows there are a equal number of apps in Linux with NO nag ware of other crap. As always I want to thank ALL the people who make Linux possible and in a world full of BS there is a sound free product that is truly free. Every problem I have with Linux in the past has been resloved. That does not mean there is a driver for every deive out there. I have a canon printer and canon does not write Linux drivers, but it still works fine as a generic printer. I hope as Linux grows so will the hardware support. I will never go back to MS.Some people will always prefer windows and that's fine with me. I am sick of worrying if my computer is safe. No OS will ever be perfect but so far Linux and Ubuntu has fit the bill for me.I also realize and thank Feodora for being the backbone of Ubuntu, they deserve there due credit.
The days of waiting for Linux to be ready for the desktop have been long over for me.
