Apple debuts Airprint in its IOS 4.2 update

Direct printing to HP’s Eprinters

SHINY TOY VENDOR Apple has released its Airprint wireless printing feature that connects to HP's Eprinters in its IOS 4.2 update for mobile Ithings.

Airprint wireless printing lets punters automatically find an HP Eprint enabled printer so Apple fanbois can print content from any Ipad, Iphone and Ipod Touch. The only thing fanbois will need to do is upgrade their mobile devices to IOS 4.2.

Apple is the first company to offer direct printing to HP's Eprint-enabled printers, which were built from technology acquired in HP's Palm buyout earlier this year. The INQUIRER reported in June that HP created the direct print technology using its shiny new Palm WebOS.

Eprint allows devices to print to an email-enabled printer without the need for a driver. This allows printed output to be delivered in just the same way as an email message.

Apple will be following up with an SDK release for apps developers in September. It expects to see the Airprint service expanded to more apps that can add the direct printing functionality.

At the moment though the service is limited to HP's 12 Eprint-enabled printers that it brought out last June. Apple needs to make Airprint a more versatile and full featured service but the company is dependent upon HP to roll out more printers.

Printers have a year or more of shelf life before they are updated so Airprint won't become a more viable proposition for at least another six months. µ

I'm rather surprised

I'm rather surprised Apple is even working with HP when they could make their own iPrinter and lock it down so only these will work with iPad. Then they could sell them for $500 each and charge $100 for iInk replacement cartridges.

iPad? No Thanks.

Thanks for the information. At least I know I am not ready to get a new printer just for the iPad. And a computer without printer is dead.

Was the article written as an 8th Grade essay project?

Snarky...

"Shiny toy vendor Apple" and "Apple fanbois" ...

Your dislike of things Apple is obvious. Go blog about something else then, and stop writing like a middle schooler.

Or anyone with a Mac

and $10 to spare can buy an app that makes it an AirPrint server for any printer it knows about. If you're on OSX 10.6.5 and are prepared to do a little hacking you can have the functionality for free.
