Google sues US government over Microsoft favouritism

Wants a level playing field
Tue Nov 02 2010, 09:12

CLOUD SOFTWARE OUTFIT Google is not going to stand for the US Department of the Interior not taking its Google Apps seriously and is suing the government for favouring Microsoft.

Yesterday the company filed a lawsuit against the federal government for buying Microsoft Office BPOS-Federal without allowing it to pitch Google Apps for Government.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Google is furious at the US government for specifically excluding it from consideration. It says that this is "unduly restrictive of competition".

Google has been selling its Google Apps into the government and institution markets where the Vole has a huge incumbent market share.

The search engine had asked about the software needs of the Department of the Interior (DOI), but when it came time to bid it was told that only Microsoft's BPOS-Federal applications could meet the requirements. Google thinks that is rubbish.

The DOI added that Google Apps is inadequate because it is insecure. It claimed that Voleware was able to supply all the security that the government department could dream of.

However Google claims that the department has tunnel vision and that it was never going to consider anything other than Microsoft. Google also claims that Microsoft's BPOS-Federal is less effective than Google Apps for Government.

The Voleware has had outages and failed to pass previously required security measures, the lawsuit alleges.

Google's lawsuit said that the DOI has tailored its requirements to fit only Microsoft's product.

If Google wins then it will be granted an injunction to prevent the current agreement between the DOI and Microsoft from going forward, and it will be allowed to fairly enter the bidding for the contract. µ

People just don't get it.

So rather than actually showing how Microsoft bloat ware is better they just said oh well we are going with what we have always gone with.

I don't think so. I could care less who wins but monopoly in the government I don't think so, bad enough all the religions crazy are trying to change our government now its monopoly galore also.

The government is not your kids they are there for the voters and the best equipment should be used not some guy up top figure he can go work for M$ after he leaves office. Your kids are just dumb, if they can't figure things out or stop nagging I know my are better than that.

Pooooor Google

I guess they'll just have to make do with all the billions they have from their other business interests and forgo the tens of thousands of pennies that a "lucrative" government contract can bring them. Cry me a river, Google.

(aside - to the "monopoly" commenter: no, this isn't an example of a monopoly. you should learn your economics before throwing around words you don't understand. sincerely, an educated DEMocrat.)

Cry Baby

I didnt expected google to act like this. At many places MS scores over google in Cloud. Also many of these deals were an upgrade of existing MS infrastructure to Cloud which makes lot of economical sense.

Simply funny!

This is the most childish thing I have ever seen in my life. And I thought my kids were worse.

This is jsust like seeing my kids having a massive tantrum because they couldn't get there own way. After seeing this, I will now nit choose Google apps over anything now.
