Samsung delays Android 2.2 for Galaxy S phones

Crosses off another month
Thu Oct 21 2010, 12:30

THE MYTHICAL Android 2.2 update for Samsung's Galaxy S smartphones has once again been delayed.

Samsung issued a press release last week promising that its update to Android 2.2 'Froyo' would be released this week. But now it has chosen a less formal medium to announce that the update has been delayed until "early November".

The news gets worse, with the firm saying that all operator versions will be available by the end of November. It is not clear why Samsung has delayed the release of Android 2.2, but the latest delay will frustrate users who have repeatedly been promised an update only for their hopes to be dashed.

Samsung's further delay to operator customised versions provides fodder for Microsoft and Apple when they criticise Google's Android operating system. Microsoft in particular has been arguing that Android is far from free, with phone manufacturers and operators having to spend money to customise it to their needs. Apple CEO and spinmeister Steve Jobs recently attacked Android as fragmented.

We wrote about that eight months ago, but Jobs' conclusion that Android's multiple versions mean it is not open source is simply baffling.

While customers might not care how much money operators spend on branding Android, if it leads to repeated delays, and limitations on the software that users can run due to varying versions among handsets, then the shine on the Android operating system might start to tarnish.

The Galaxy S smartphone has been a sales success for Samsung and rightly so. The combination of high specification hardware coupled with a powerful smartphone operating system is hard to resist, however Android 2.2 will have been out for the best part of six months by the time UK Galaxy S owners get their hands on the software.

Brits are used to being last in the queue for most things but usually that's before they have splashed out hundreds of pounds on a product. Samsung's latest delay will test the patience of even the biggest Android fan. µ

@plop

Thanks for your kind words mate, I shall keep your comment duly noted under "c*nt". (coincidently, that is right alongside Samsung's dev team).

Just FYI, I was not "relying" on the phone; I actually had my sat nav with me, but the car I was in had a broken lighter socket so I couldn't charge it. I just thought that I would keep my post pertinent to the story.

Roid Rage

at these Samsung Clowns! I had a i780 running WinMo and they never updated it. Now on the Galaxy S.

You would think they would try to make a push into the high end (better margins) but seriously it is like these big companies want to make pennies (selling hardware on skinny margins) instead of pounds (selling an experience like Apple).

Blame anything but yourself

"GPS is well documented, but cost me a very large amount of money last week when I was heading for a meeting in Cardiff, and didn't have my sat nav. The GPS kept telling me I was in north wales, and I missed my meeting and lost a contract."

Are you kidding? If you relied on a phone to get you to such a vital meeting then you're a fool, and deserved to lose that contract. You could have stopped at a service station and purchased something known as a "map".

What a Joke

What a complete farce…

Running the Galaxy S on extended test vs iPhone 4 for a month now and it is no way ready to challenge the iPhone or Windows Mobile.

Slow, poor battery life and did I mention SLOW. VERY painful experience using Exchange so so so slow!!

Was waiting until Samsung got their act together and released 2.2 before recommending to the business.

Can’t be arsed to waiting another 6 weeks, so iPhone 4 it is!

Won’t be running Android or buying Samsung again – what a pair of clowns and what a joke!

Samsung and android don't have a good history

wait a minute this is coming from a company that sold the behold2. the phone was still in the shelves when they announced the end of support. so it only got a maintenance release of android. 1.6 with swype (one of the worst implementation of sliding) after it had promised a 2x update. then to make things worse the galaxy has the same specs but will get updates. apparently the behold2 is not suitable for 2x according to Samsung. at least with my omnia i can update to unofficial windows mobile release where the dammed drivers work. i read that someone was working on a Rom for the behold2 but the camera was never working right. but as off now since the news of Samsung dropping the behold nobody wants to touch the phone. so much for community support. of course the phone still has some issues that haven't been fixed like right now my phone thinks the time is 12.49 (for the last hour) and that its still charching. apparently i have a wireless charger. this kind of situations make me weary of android this early in the game, basically i went out and bought a beta phone. it specially feels that way seeing the pace of android development. do i think android is a bad platform? no i don't, i think that the open source community needs to make it to where wa can take our phones out of Samsungs control by having a consistent upgrade and driver model. yes yes i know about kernel headers. i tried install angrybirdz and nothing, maybe fragmentation is good. that we can spot the bad fragments and stick to ubuntu.

This is getting very very annoying Samsung.

I have been using my Galaxy S for about 2 months now, and am getting increasingly frustrated with its little quirks and gremlins.

GPS is well documented, but cost me a very large amount of money last week when I was heading for a meeting in Cardiff, and didn't have my sat nav. The GPS kept telling me I was in north wales, and I missed my meeting and lost a contract.

RFS was a ridiculous idea in the first place - go back to a proper file system and the lag issues will go away.

I have had HTC phones for about ten years (all WinMo) - that is how you run a mobile manufacturing company. Samsung should stick to shiny TVs.

What pisses me off more than anything is the lies from their support teams. How many dates have been given for this now? I reckon I know of at least 4 announcements with dates directly from Samsung - stop giving false expectations, then people won't get so pissed off.
