HEAD ANDROID ENGINEER Andy Rubin at "disingenuous" Google has replied to the babblings of Steve Jobs with devastatingly concise open source juju.
The INQUIRER reported yesterday that Jobs, apparently drunk on his profits from a record $20 billion third quarter, spun a skewed alternative view of reality in which Apple's record hardware sales meant that open source is not really open because it's not monolithic, and that most video on the web is using HTML5. Dorothy, we're not in Kansas anymore.
So well done Andy Rubin for posting a tweet, explaining in just 140 characters with the help of Unix shell code what open source means.
"The definition of open is "mkdir android ; cd android ; repo init -u git://android.git.kernel.org/platform/manifest.git ; repo sync ; make," tweeted Andy.
For those not up on Unix shell code, it means make an android directory, switch to that android directory, initiate a repository connection to the Android kernel repository, synchronise the directory with what is in the repository, and compile the source code.
What Jobs doesn't seem to uderstand is that Android's open source code can be freely downloaded by anyone and then compiled into a complete, working copy of the operating system - not something you'll be seeing any time with Apple's proprietary, closed source IOS.
Jobs used the pejorative term "fragmented" to describe the Android OS experience, failing to appreciate that open source software can be acquired, tweaked, modded and customised by anyone, anytime, anywhere. And praise the free and open source software licences for that. µ
While the Vole was always a large money grubbing company, Bill always gave loads of money to charity and set up the Gates Foundation. I would be surprised if I heard Steve selling an iSomething at half price to poor and sick kids in Indonesia!!
Wow, I am floored.
See people, now this is how to troll, take notes please, there will be a test tomorrow.
Almost as good, in fact, as Mr Job$ himself.
If you have any problem with Android, you are left to your devices without any help. It is good for software programmers who can compile and download, install hacked version of paid software in their rooted phones but for the average guy like me it is a nightmare contacting the customer unfriendly google with any problem. Google has a history of stealing copyright material and soooner or later all the patents which google has stolen to make their software work will be found. At least Steve Jobs company does original work, helps customers and does not support hacked software.
How about App£€?
The pure beauty of Andy Rubin’s response will be lost on Apple – and to me, I find that so ironic, for this is the type of proper insult that I would have expected from Jobs and team when they were the target of Microsoft rants…
I bet Apple fanboys don't understand just how spot on Andy's 'thrust and parry' is.
Please Steve stop the bull**, not everyone is a sheep you know.
Not very fond of Google half finished products, still I do wish Android will win the war and we'll have Apple cornered in a niche.
Not that Google is charity but with Apple you are pretty sure to pay to much, be stuck with proprietary equipments and certainly go against any standard: flash anyone?
P.S: fun script Sir Andy Rubin!
When I read the above comment title "jobs=$$" I was reminded of how everyone used to refer to microsft as "M$" or "Micro$oft".
Now it seems that Apple deserves this MUCH more. However, unfortunatly, there is no S in "Apple." I have some suggestions.
A$$le. No s's? who cares? Also includes "Ass"
O$X?
ok so that's all my ideas.
The only concern with any ceo now a days is how much money they make for them and there company. While this is there job, honest and integrity have long gone.
My assessment of a man is what they give back to other people, which seems to e the opposite of most rich people. In other words a great man is not measured by how much money they have but by how much they give. The people behind Linux have greatly contributed to open source and society. I don't like Steve Jobs and don't care what he thinks, he is just a money grubber who takes credit for everything Apple.
OS X is better than Windows in my mind but falls short of Linux and Unix.
OS X is basically Unix without the freedom and creativity of Linux.
