Iphone 4 jailbreak gets a launch date

A special date for a magical device
Fri Oct 08 2010, 14:15

THE LATEST ATTACK on Steve Jobs' church of the technologically naive will begin on Sunday as a jailbreak targeting the firm's latest consumer gadgets is released.

News of the Greenpois0n jailbreak for IOS 4.1 has been floating around for some time, however now it has been confirmed that the software will be released on a rather special date and time, 10/10/10 at 10:10:10 AM. The jailbreak is a bootloader exploit, meaning that this time Jobs' Mob cannot just release a software update to patch things up as usual, in fact hardware revisions will be required.

The exploit will work with all devices that use Apple's A4 chip, including the Iphone 4, Ipod Touch 4G and Ipad. It is likely that some off-shoot of Greenpois0n will work with the new Apple TV though at this point the developer has only said it is a probability. After all the Iphone and Ipod Touch offer a bigger chance to get up Jobs' nose.

This update will not work with older devices, though jailbreak software already exists for Iphone 3G and 3GS devices.

Jailbreaking allows Iphone users to install applications from alternative application stores. Apple keeps tight controls in place thinking that its technologically challenged users don't know what's best for them and their devices. It also allows the firm to keep software products that pose a threat to its moneymaking schemes away from users.

It has taken a little longer than expected for the talented coders to circumvent Steve Jobs' artificial roadblocks to user freedom, but the wait is almost over. Those fanbois who want to stray from Apple's cult will be able to do so on Sunday. µ
